HERE'S THE REAL SCOOP ON SHIRATAKI!!
Okay, so I heard about the amazing Shirataki noodle and decided to give it a try. After MUCH research and deliberation I decided to try both the "miracle noodle" (zero calorie, glucomannan, no tofu) and the House Foods (40 calorie per bag, tofu and yam flour) varities. BOTH arrived today, so I decided to try both and give an unbiased review. #1 - Anyone who says these noodles have a repulsive odor, has never eaten fish before. #2 - anyone who says these noodles have a repulsive texture, has never eaten ramen, or udon noodles before. I put a small pot of boiling water on the stove, brought to a boil. Opened the bag, put noodles into a strainer, and rinsed 10-15 seconds under cold water. Then I put the noodles in pot of boiling water. I purposely sniffed the bag.. and yes.. it has a medium to mild "fishy" odor, nothing worse than salmon. If you don't like this, then don't sniff the bag. The "miracle noodle" had slightly less of this odor. I purposely sniffed the boiling water after about 1 minute, and yes, it had an odor, not so much fishy anymore, as almost plastic-y.. kind of hard to describe... again, don't sniff the steam if this bothers you. After 3 minutes of boiling (for the House foods brand), and 2 mintues (for the miracle noodle brand), I poured into the strainer again, and rinsed with HOT water for 10 seconds. I then drained, and put back into the small pot, and added half a flavor packet from a pack of ramen noodles (chicken flavor). IT TASTED JUST LIKE RAMEN! I was very excited. The noodles (as other reviews state) have no flavor on their own, but take on asian flavors nicely. As for being a "spaghetti substitute," these would probably do the same as if you put ramen noodles under some spaghetti sauce.. not quite right.. but not the fault of the noodles, just not the intent of an asian noodle. As for the texture, these noodles actually get FIRMER as you cook them, instead of softer (like regular noodles). If your're a fan of "al dente" pasta, then this is for you. YES < they are a bit firm, but not hard like rubber bands (like other reviews have said). And not slimy in the slightest, I don't get why people have said this (again, felt just like ramen noodles in my mouth). I love al dente pasta myself, and found the texture preferable to normal ramen noodles. The "miracle noodle" is slightly firmer, and more transluscent (like more tradition ramen noodles). I ate one bag of each, and loved every bite of both. This was also about 4 hours ago, and I felt full this whole time (not uncomfortably full, just not hungry). I'm VERY glad I took a chance on this. Perhaps if you have a picky pallet, this isn't for you. But if you like Ramen noodles, then I'm telling you give these a try. One bag (of either) is about the same volume as one packet of Ramen noodles, but at a fraction of the calories (or zero in the case of miracle noodles). I plan on experimenting with other spices, such as bullion, and asian "flavor packets" found at the grocery store. Hope this helps!!

Fantastic addition to stir-fry; delicious if you cook them right
I heard about these noodles years ago through Hungry Girl, although they weren't available in my area's grocery stores until just a couple of years ago. When I learned 2 years ago that I am gluten-intolerant (borderline celiac), I started using rice pastas and the like, but they weren't all that satisfying and still had a ton of calories and simple carbs. Remembering the stories I'd read about shirataki, I thought I should give them a try. I had initially tried a different brand (one of the tofu varieties). I must admit, the first few times I tried shirataki noodles, I was really unimpressed, but I was pretty much just rinsing them and adding them to whatever I was making, but once I learned how to properly cook them, even the other brand was really good. The best way to prepare them that I've found is a little bit involved, but they are still very quick and simple. I put about a teaspoon of oil (grapeseed) in my 9" nonstick wok and preheat it on high. I open the package of noodles directly into a colander, letting the liquid drain out (it smells a little like shrimp to me, but YMMV), and then open up the hot tap over them for a couple of minutes. I then shake/squeeze out the excess water, sometimes blotting on some paper towels, then snip them with kitchen shears until they are a more manageable length on average (although sometimes I do this directly in the pan, just because I'm weird and that seems fun). Transfer the noodles to the pan. The oil should be hot and the noodles should sizzle when they hit the pan; grapeseed oil has a very high smoke point, which is why I prefer it for stir-frying. I tend to use silicone-covered kitchen tongs for cooking my noodles, as it seems easier to grab them and turn them than trying to just stir. I let them cook for a couple of minutes until they are more or less dry, then add my other ingredients in order of how long they take to cook. You really can't overcook shirataki noodles (in my experience), though - they don't get soggy like wheat pasta. My favorite recipe is to add 6 oz. medium raw shrimp (usually I just rinse/thaw the shrimp and noodles together in the colander, then separate them as even raw shrimp doesn't take very long to cook), 1/2-3/4 cup of chopped green onion, 2-3 tsp of liquid aminos (or light soy sauce), a beaten egg or two, and a dash of ginger & garlic powder at the end. The noodles take a back seat to whatever ingredients you add, and are just a nice addition that also tends to be very filling. I calculated this recipe in a diet log, and it checks in at under 400 calories for what amounts to a HUGE bowl of noodles with 6 oz. of shrimp and two large eggs. Tons of protein and very filling for very few calories. Even my exceedingly picky husband likes them, and he isn't rummaging through the fridge & cupboards 10 minutes later like usual. Last night I added some frozen grilled red & yellow peppers in place of the shrimp, and it was outstanding. I like these because they are not only gluten-free, but soy-free. While I don't actively avoid all things soy, I do try to keep my intake in check, mostly because of how ubiquitous it is in nearly every other prepared food product (especially gluten-free). I'm still curious about the nutrition measurements, considering the package describes them as being made of soluble fiber, but lists <1g of fiber in a serving. In any event, I am always full and happy after a meal containing these.

You can get a similar item for less
I like these noodles. They are so tasteless and bland and are PERFECT for Thai dishes . This noodle will absorb ANY flavor you want. They are perfect when you want to have the flavors of whatever your cooking permeate the noodles. The noodles are easy to use just open packet, rinse and dry in the skillet. My only unhappiness with these noodles is that they have double in price, and are 7 0z instead of 8 0z. You can get a similar product at the groceries for 8 oz at half the price . Still it is a good product and if you live in the city or California where EVERYTHING is astronomical, these will be an OK buy.

Don't expect pasta!
I am so happy to have found Miracle Noodle here, introducing me to the Shirataki noodle! If you are expecting it to taste or have the texture of pasta, you may be disappointed. However, I love it! I eat a lot Asian food so I was able to accept the initial smell and unique texture. The "fishy" smell rises out. It wasn't strong smelling when i opened it up, but because I read the past reviews I had to give it a good sniff to see what they were complaining about. And yes, it was not a very appetizing smell, but it went away after rising it for about 30 seconds. I ate my first serving of Miracle Noodle with a Japanese noodle soup base (used for tempura sauce, somen, udon, etc.) and it worked perfectly. I was positively giddy. Zero calories! I actually love the texture. It's a little rubbery but not chewy. I don't know what it can be compared to in our common American cuisine, but it is made from a vegetable, so expect a more vegetable-like texture. Like another reviewer stated, it is similar to Asian glass noodles. Now for the big test: Let my husband try it. New foods often ignite dialogue like, "Eww, I hate X." "You've never tried X." "Yeah cuz I don't like it." LOL. He has, however, become more adventurous with new foods and seeing me dance around singing "zero calories" tempted him enough. I gave him a bite and he just kind of responded with "meh". I didn't expect much, so I count that as a success in my book! With the right ingredients and maybe some hot sauce, I'm sure he'd like it just fine. I am excited to try different methods of preparing this noodle. It seems like the perfect filler food in place of rice or pasta. MUCH healthier. It really does just take on the flavor of what it's prepared with. I was able to find individual packages a shirataki noodles (different brands) in my local Asian food market (next to produce) at a lower price, however I have not tried it yet. It looks exactly the same and I can't imagine it'd be much different. So if you're hesitant about buying a 6-pack, maybe you could try that first. I am so glad Miracle Noodle has marketed this product in this way to help get this out to more people. I would have never thought something like this existed. This has become one of my new staples. Bye-bye high calorie noodles!

No more noodles!
First, I never ever ever leave reviews on products. I either like them or I don't, but I figure since I order them blindly, I have to only myself to blame if I don't care for it. This, however, was EXTREME! I saw the noodles on an episode of "The Talk" with a guest chef talking about how great they were..no carbs, no calories, great taste. Wow! I ordered 18 packages of the stuff without hesitation! I was so excited, I even paid for the extra shipping cost to get it here faster! The product arrived on Thursday and I was so excited. I called my husband at work to tell him we were having spaghetti with the Miracle Noodles! Oh boy!! Neither of us could wait! I followed the directions carefully and was not surprised with the fish odor that I first noticed. "It will go away after rinsing and blanching just like the chef said" I told myself and it pretty much did. What killed us was the texture of those noodles. One bite and we were both like...maybe it will get better. Second bite...maybe we can get used to it. Third bite...down the garbage disposal it went! Bleakkkk! Too gross for words! I am not even sure how to describe what it felt like biting into those noodles. Some have said rubber bands, but I think that would be an improvement. I also heard gummy bears, but this was nothing like gummy bears. I am only hoping now that since they are plant based, I can throw them outside---somewhere far from the house----to be of some benefit to my yard.

Meh.
If you're a low-carber, this is a good product with the FOLLOWING caveats: 1. No, it doesn't taste like wheat pasta. That's a dumb assessment anyway. It's not wheat pasta. Tofurkey doesn't taste like real Turkey either. This is the "next best thing", not "nearly the same in every way." Proceed with this purchase knowing it doesn't taste like anything else- in fact, it doesn't taste like anything. It's entirely neutral and will just be a medium for whatever you combine it with. 2. The product smells out of the bag, but the smell goes away after cooking. Like fish. HUUUULGHT. No biggie. 3. My chief complaint is the texture and the tendency of the noodles to stick in one big glob. This doesn't sound so bad, but... try it. I've used them in a variety of dishes and inevitably, regardless of preparation or combination, you end up with two masses of food on your plate- a big adhered mess of noodles, and everything else. Sorta defeats the purpose of eating pasta which in your quaintest dreams is perfectly, evenly tossed. Try to pull the noodles apart, and you'll get the sauce/toppings EVERYWHERE, while getting slapped in the face by errant noodles suddenly freed from their mutual adherent bondage with the potential energy of an edible slingshot. You either need to be prepared to cut the noodles every time you eat them or eat out of a large, deep bowl and stick your FACE into it when you eat. Which is not a problem for a bachelor like me. But it ain't exactly a social experience. I'll still continue to eat them but just know that the "Miracle" part of the name refers solely to the calorie count. YMMV.

Surprisingly delightful
I was going to write a review whether I thought these were good or bad. Of course I was going to hope for good because I just ordered three packages without evening knowing what they really tasted like. I was risking a gamble. I just got the package today and decided I was going to try them today. I had been informed and read the reviews about how the noodles really take on the flavor and that is completely correct. I cooked them in boiling water with soy sauce and garlic salt. Those noodles tasted superbly. I was not disappointed. If anything I was surprised how well they took in the flavor. I was a bit skeptic but I am glad to have been proved wrong. Also, I did make sure to rinse the noodles thoroughly to get rid of the fish smell. I am not 100% there was a fish smell because I had some dishes from when I just had crab but even if there was a smell there was not taste of it in the food. The noodles do clump a bit even after I patted them down with the paper towel but they can be taken apart. Honestly, they remind me a bit of ramen noodles but these are better because there are no calories to them! While ramen noodles are not exactly at a good place on the food pyramid. The reason I decided to give these a try is because I am on the HCG diet and if you are on that diet you know you are limited to very particular foods because it is calorie based. This is a great addition to this diet. I get to eat more without the worry of hurting my diet. I also get very full. I only used half the packet for my meal and found it to be very filling. If you are looking for something to help with a diet or just want to try to be healthy without giving up all your loves such as pasta I recommend these. I can't wait to try the other foods that are offered by this company.
