A film about fall and resurrection of a former b-star, that truly represented his real resurrection
The film that turned a declining b-movie action specialist into a universally acclaimed star. His resurrection starts with this very personal action/intimate/selfbiographical film.Probably touching the bottom of his life and careers, Van Damme abandoned any resistance and decided to stage his own drama through a very particular kind of film, where he plays himself in a sort of fictional situation that looks a lot like a drama therapy. JCVD is full of dark irony, sarcasm, bitterness and reveal the deep and existential personality and spirit of this neglected actor and man, who finally finds the strenght to put himself back on his feet.An excellent screenwriting where you can't tell when it's real life dialogue and when it's just script, a dense directing style, with a dark photography, a good action/thrilling approach, a certain knwoledge of dramatic visual language and an intimate touch, plus a fantastic long monologue (all in one long shot and camera dolly) by Van Damme himself, where he proves some unexpected acting qualities and a unique courage in talking about himself and his misery, with a great dramatic intensity.A film that, while talking about a star fall and redemption, that basically happens before our eyes, while it is staging it, takes this story to talk about contemporary unstable and meaningless hysteria, where everyone becomes famous for few minutes, even a falling star who is suddenly remembered by people who never even watched his film, and whose drama is to believe that this will last for a while.Fortunately, this film helped him live a second life: without it, we would have never seen the now superpopular Volvo epic split

Probably the best JCVD film ever (though that's a tough call
Probably the best JCVD film ever (though that's a tough call, as ll always love Lionheart amongst others ;)LOVE the opening sequence, love the monologue sequence even critics raved about, and the self-referentiality is more than just a gimmick - for those who know JCVD's films (and others in the genre, for that matter), it's really funny and often poignant, too. Great movie.

2-Disc Double Van Dammage Edition
This film [JCVD] was released as both a single disc version and a 2-disc edition.Amazon do not seem to have differentiated between the two.The 2-Disc Double Van Dammage Edition contains the following Special Features:- Deleted Scenes- Making Of JCVD- Teasers- Documentary [A Day with JCVD]The film itself is a far cry from the usual Van Damme kick-ass action flicks that he is commonly associated with. This film is more akin to being an art-house movie. It is brilliantly acted and well scripted, and with the dialogue being somewhere in the region of at least 80 percent French spoken (with English subtitles), this will not appeal to the usual Van Damme fanbase. Intersped with monologues from Van Damme which may or may not be autobiographical, this film shows a different side to the Van Damme that we are all accustomed to seeing. Add to the mix, a clever bank robbery and what we have here is a foriegn language indie art-house crime thiller. If you want a standard Van Damme kick-ass action flick, do not buy this.If you want to see a serious piece of film-making that proves Van Damme can really act and enjoy foriegn language films, then try it out... You may well be surprised.

Great film
Wow. This film changed my view of JCVD, he really can act. It's a funny, sometimes touching, heartfelt, almost autobiographical film, that I'd recommend anyone watching. The artwork on the box makes out it's an action film, it's not. There is action, there's suspense, there's comedy, there's fourth wall breaking monologues. I'd call it more of an art house film if anything.Buy it, watch it.

Simply excellent
I bought this film about three years ago. I'm not a fan of Van Damme movies,so not really sure what persuaded me to give it a go. Probably the price! But am I glad that i wisely invested those 2 shiny pounds. It's an absolutely cracking film. Clever, witty, interesting. Jean-Claude is superb in it. I have given it to several friends, and even played it at my local - very arty - film club. I've yet to find anyone that hasn't really enjoyed it. It may not appeal to your average Van Damme fan,but everyone else really should give it a go. 3 years on and I reckon this is one of my top ten films ever- that's how highly I rate it.

Great movie for Jean Claude Van Damme fans
It's a great movie for JCVD fans. There's a great special in the disc as well, an interview with the man himself. If you're a fan, you won't regret it.

Just a very, very good movie
This Blu-ray is no showpiece to demonstrate the abilities of your equipment: The picture is not sharp, at times blurry, color is almost nonexistent, contrasts are overdone, grain is present. But all this just adds to the impact of this modern film noir, to the feeling of inevitable doom and the almost pornographic display of emotions. The movie makes you feel for the JCVD portrayed here, even if you disliked him before.Do not expect a straight-out action movie, but a film high on suspense with violence or its threat concerning exactly you. Not the right stuff to switch your brain off after a hard days work but to revive it.If in doubt if this is the right movie for you (as i was), at its current price it is well worth the risk.Because there is quite a chance that you may really, really like it (as i do).French-speaking viewers be forewarned: The english subtitles appear to be hard-wired and can not be switched off.
