Is the handle actual leather or something other than plastic?

Hi, it made of synthetic Leather.

No....it is not sharp....for practice use only.

Can you use this for defense

NO! This “device” simulates a T’ai chi “sword,” and is used for practicing exercise routines which involve the use of a “sword.” T’ai chi is based on martial arts, but is practiced for it’s value in keeping healthy through slow deliberate movements which help one maintain balance and flexibility of the mind and body. This product has absolutely NO sharp edges. I purchased this to use in my T’ai chi exercises, and for NO OTHER purpose. Study martial arts if you’re worried about defending yourself.

Part of the extendable blade has immediately become stuck. Is there a way to fix it?

I usually tap mine on a hard surface that will not damage the sword or the surface. Like one of the rugs we have laying over our tile floor or our door mat that rests on concrete. At class I use the door mat at the entrance to class since the floor is finished concrete. If you do a lot of sword forms the pieces can collapse so I make sure they are tight so I have to tap them back in most times after I practice.
