Text book
St. Hildegard is a bit hard to read but what do you expect from a text book? She is an amazing person to read however.

Obviously a woman of her time
I am glad that I read this, simply because it enlightened me about how a revered woman of her time, who had visions and acted on them, was able to be heard in the Catholic Church of her time. The Preface, Introduction, and Translation notes are quite enlightening. I did not find that Hildegard's interpretations of her religion, the bible excerpts she chose to use to support her interpretations were illuminating or of comfort for me, but I can certainly see where Scivias could lead to some deep, discussions of the role of women in the Church, then and now. I read some of Michael Fox' " Hildegard Of Bingen..." and how he champions Hildegard . I also read "Illuminations" by Mary Sharratt, and I find her novel to be much more indicative of the feel I have for what might or could have happened to cause Hildegard von Bingen to be such a cause celebre.

Great book if you understand English very well
My main language is Spanish. I understand English and I am currently reading books in English. "Hildergard of Bingen: Scivias" is a very difficult book to understand. Probably because it was originally written in Latin and translated to English. The book has a lot of great information. I have read the first 3 chapters and put the book on hold. I am reading other books to improve my English understanding. I wish I know better English because this book is one of those I so wanted to have in my collection and I will read it as soon as I am ready. In the mean time learning more English. If you understand English very well, I recommend this book.

Beware: interesting only if you are really an expert
It is a remarkable translation of the work of Hildegard. Evidently, for someone interested in Middle Age literature or theology, an interesting opportunity to compare this way of presenting theological convictions with the scholastic method that was developingfive hundred pages of a 'vision' but, again, nothing to do with mystery or apocalyptic images..., but with Hildegard's vision of the divine-cosmic order. Section on priesthood and marriage can be though, and certainly not what some feminists pretend to find in her booksCongratulations to the Classics of Western Spirituality: and excellent opportunity to get acquainted with masterworks of different periods and religious traditions

My first encounter with St Hildegard of Bingen was as ...
My first encounter with St Hildegard of Bingen was as an undergraduate student in which she was presented as some sort of liberal feminist. I've been reading the saints recently not so much for the acquirement of knowledge for myself but rather to interact with them and let them speak to me. St Hildegard of Bingen though is definitely no liberal feminist. She tends to be a ranter especially against the stagnant clerics in her day. But her theology is quite in line with the entire teachings of the Western Catholic Church. I thought her dogmatic theology was much more simpler than a St Thomas Aquinas.

I feel like God is speaking to me through Hildegard.
Even though Hildegard lived in the 1100's, the topics that God speaks about through her are still relevant today. About the Eucharist transforming to Christ's body and blood , even though we can't see that transformation through our human eyes. Much talk about our choices and how Satan tries to tempt us into sin. Yes, he's real. Some end times prophecy. God tells Hildegard that He wants her to write down what she hears and sees in her visions so her writings can help others choose the right way. Not light reading. but well worth is for the spirit.

An amazing visionary
What an amazing visionary. I read this book for a class on various mystics of the Catholic Church. Some time earlier I had read a secular novel on Hildegard which left me with some bias that Hildegard was anti-magisterium, anti-clerical, anti-male, and a radical feminist of the modern ilk. She was not any of these, but rather an extremely intelligent, self-educated holy woman who worked for reform of the church of her day and her Benedictine order out of love. Now that Hildegard has been named a Doctor of the the Church, she should become better known and understood.

Newest Doctor of the Church
This is one of the seminal works of Saint Hildegard, and one of the only ones available in a serious edition in English. The book is a series of visions Hildegard received, including reproductions of the illustrations she had her sisters create. After describing each vision, Hildegard provides the interpretation which she was given along with the vision. This is a complete walk-through of Christian doctrine, from creation and the Fall to the end of the world, and the judgement to come after. A wild ride, well worth reading.
