Not a good fit for an e39 wagon/touring
The e39 is the BMW 5 series from 1996 until 2003. On my 2002, this was a difficult fit and install. On the sedans, the whole trunk light pops out for replacement with this, but on the wagons, only the light cover pops off from the outside. You'll need to remove the entire interior of the rear hatch to remove the actual light and make room for the camera and wires into the hatch. I have done this several times now for other reasons, and you will almost certainly break frustrating plastic tabs every time you do, making it harder to reinstall it all securely.I also had to remove some of the plastic from the camera enclosure for a secure fit. I was able to get the locking tabs to grab eventuality, but had to make the camera mount thinner until I could push it in far enough to reach the tabs. Also, once you replace the license plate light, you'll begin to get warnings from the car about the license plate lights not working. This is because the e39 has a light computer that tests each bulb regularly, even when they after off. With an LED, you'll see it pulse on/off quickly and regularly when it tests it. With the stock incandescent bulbs, this is imperceptible. And since the LED uses so much less energy, the computer thinks it's out. Putting a resistor inline with the LED light would solve this issue. And finality, the RCA cord for the camera signal is too short by about 3 feet.Overall, the camera seems good, though I haven't used it at night yet. I think it's just a really bad fit for e39 touring owners.
