Released too quickly to Kindle
Its great to have a color, Kindle edition of this book for use in the field. But there are a few problems. The index has all the subjects but no page numbers. The fine print of some figures is unreadable. Biggest issue, though, is that there is more that could be said or shown in terms of rock and mineral identification.

The book is succinct, well organized and illustrated with clear figures and diagrams. It is also up to date and an essential field reference for professional geologists and, especially, undergraduate geologists or amateur geologists. I have no hesitation in giving it 5 stars.

I love this little field guide! Very pleased. So much good and practical identification information as well as basic theory. Excellent for a beginner rock collector like me.

OK very well illustrated but you would need to roam foreign lands to see the sites. As igneous is more or less standard Scotland Dartmoor Java Wales basic geology this will apply to most world sites anyway as the rocks can be compared and identified. Clear and concise and allows speculation on derivatives and variety as theory based with prime examples from which composites can be explained. I would advise a few large petrology books to keep in the study or holiday study centre for evening checking and improving theory to support this obviously. A good Mineraology text would be essential to check components observed. Philpott is mentioned herein, use it. The point is the field guide allows you to assume certain structure associations of rock types which improves understanding. Have a good mountain roam.
