A handheld, cheap vane anemometer for non-highly accurate or precise tasks
For a rare climbing gig this winter I needed a handheld anemometer, small and inexpensive, as windchill is a critical factor to monitor if ambient air temperature carries a risk of exposed-skin frostbite, such as less than 10°F and winds of up to some 30 mph, speed above which sensible people should seek shelter from the wind (in practice, it is best to follow the reliable 2001 wind-chill temperature index of NOAA). [Update (2/20/2018): see informed comment below from a customer on risk of non-freezing cold injuries at _near_ freezing temperatures.]1. Currently there are several models of vane-type handheld anemometers manufactured in China and available in Chinese marketplaces for wholesale purchase by importing retailers who sell them here. The unit on sale in this page by Otraki is but one of several customized brand names for the same compact anemometer model having a two-bottom control, a black ABS body and an orange silicone cover, an OEM model often but not always with a five-character identification ending in [. .]816. Since this model has a price range in Amazon spanning a three-fold difference among fifteen different brand names for it (see "Customers also shopped for" section of this product page), I bought one in the low-end of the range.2. It measures wind speed in three modes --current (CU), maximal (MAX) and average (AVG)-- in either the metric or the English system with an accuracy not better than ±5%. Five types of speed units are selectable, plus a graphic Beaufort wind scale for sailing. It measures air temperature with an NTC thermistor circuit (a resistor with a negative temperature coefficient, so the resistance decreases with increasing air temperature), whose probe is located halfway inside the small air conduit at 8 o'clock of the vane's opening; its accuracy is not better than ±2°C. Readings can be selected in °C or °F.3. The unit arrived with a functioning 3V Li CR2032 battery installed in its compartment, and a second one inside the plastic package. To access the battery compartment, or to switch temperature units, you need to slip off the black plastic body from its orange silicone cover by gently pushing the rear holder of the vane. Be careful: the vane holder looks a bit delicate.4. The unit comes with an instruction/specs single page written in a sufficiently clear Sinicized English (whose conjugation and declension errors do not seem to matter). The required removal of the cover for replacing the lithium battery is not mentioned in the manual, so one has to discover that on one's own.5. It is small (4.25" L x 1.75" W x 0.75" D) and light (less than 4 oz). It lacks a screw hole to affix it to a pod for hands-free use in the field. To make measurements, turn the vane so it is perpendicular to the wind (or air source) and wait a brief time for the readings to stabilize. Comparisons against a calibrated Kestrel 3000 anemometer of a friend, carried on a windy day, indicated my unit was within specs.

Great product especially considering price
Fast delivery. Product as described. Thermometer checks out, but have not yet checked wind speed accuracy. Given the price, this is great deal. Small and light enough to include along with my photo gear in the pack. Have ordered a 2nd unit to have in a second pack. Seems well made for the price and use. (this is definitely not meant for demanding professional use)

not easy to operate
It is not easy to just turn on or off. Changing from km/hr to mph to kts is not easy.

Defective Product
We bought this for our scientifically minded seven year old. He had been talking nonstop about wind speed, and would constantly ask me to check the weather app on my phone to see what the wind speed was. He was so excited when he opened the box. However, it doesn’t work more than a couple seconds before turning itself off, and sometimes it won’t turn on at all. The instructions say the auto off timeframe is 14 minutes, so this is clearly defective. We are very disappointed. We tried changing the battery even though the battery indicator said it was fully charged. Unfortunately, this didn’t work either. We returned this product.

I would not let it get lost can a pocket and full of a lot of debris
I'm giving it 5 stars simply because it is as described. I use it to measure wind speed when I'm shooting it's not a high-dollar item but I keep it clean I keep the propeller clean and it's always there for a very basic function for around 11 bucks I couldn't beat it.

Ft per min
Works well from 22 ft per minute and higher. I bought to measure the flow of fresh air entering my home. I was able to achieve 400 ft per min on a 6 inch duct or 80 cu ft per min :-) very happy.

Does what it says.
A simple tool that does exactly what it says. I used it to measure the air coming out of my vents in my home and help me balance the air upstairs vs. Downstairs. A great simple inexpensive tool.

Error readings & eats batteries
First off, it just isn't very accurate. More than half the time I turn it on, it shows a strange display or the screen is frozen and I have to turn it off and then back on again. I've only used this out in the field less than a dozen times and the battery is already dead. Save your money and buy something else.
