A VERY GOOD REFERENCE FOR THE SCHOOL NURSE’S OFFICE!
This book was written by the American Academy of Pediatrics. So this book was written by a group of specialists. So this author feels that this publication should be at every school nurse’s desk! The first nine chapters deal with the basics of nursing in the school setting. The reader will soon discover that these chapters are much shorter that our “good old fashioned” nursing textbooks. For example, chapter 4 is titled “Care Plans”. The reader then makes the shocking discovery that the chapter is only 3 pages long!As the reader is in shock, he/she discovers the book title states “A QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE”! This book was NOT written to teach the nurse what each nurse should have already been taught! So, this book is really a great reference book!!For example, Chapter 3 is the chapter dealing with the treatment team. The chapter addresses the physical therapist, the occupational therapist, and the speech therapist to name just three therapists. This chapter is just 3 pages long!! This author will now say to all the readers of this review the following couple of words: “Wake Up and welcome to the real world!”.The first 9 chapters should have been fully learned by the school nurse while in college! Chapter 9 is a 1 page chapter on how to use the Quick Reference Sheets. Now the second half of the book is GREAT!!The Quick Reference Sheets present just about every chronic illness that a student could have!Even adaptive devices are presented, such as the Gastrostomy tubes, and hearing sides, including the cochlear implant! Chapter 11 contains about 150 pages of the best reference pages that this author has every seen! When visual aids are needed the reader will find top quality color photos are presented! The final chapter is chapter 12. The title is “Sample Documents and Forms”. This chapter certainly does not disappoint! Here, the school nurse is given over 50 pages of different forms and documents. Every one of them are “top of the line!”.This author would like to inform the readers that although the forms and documents look great, there is an old saying that “everything that shines and glitters ain’t gold”!! No matter how great these forms look, PLEASE make sure the forms follow your state board of nursing regulations! Your state boards of nursing are our laws we MUST obey!In this author’s 30+ years of practice, this book should be on the desk of EVERY school nurse!By JOHN SMITHKEY III, BSN, RN, LSN
