Syl on Hi
This compilation has mainly recordings from Syls Hi days. Very nice budget price compilation and good introduction to Syl Johnson at Hi. If you think you'll like it you might be better off with the Complete Syl Johnson on Hi Records CD though*

Mississipi Mainman is right!
A great CD of material by an underrated artist. Syl is closer in voice and style to the legendary O.V. Wright than to Al Green, with the full majesty of the Hi writing and rhythm teams, and the choice of material and supporting sleeve notes are exemplary. Well done Backbeat, this almost makes up for the Motorcity stuff (why, why?)

Not bad
Ok CD. Only bought it out of curiosity as I had heard one of his tracks on a compilation. Good condition to say it is second-hand.

SYL JOHNSON IS THE SOUTHERN SOUL MAN !
What an artist and what a cracking release this is, the final two tracks are more than worth the price alone.Great songs, awesome funky soul backing,a tight rock solid horn section, and Syl's fabulous voice, make this the blues-soul reissue of the year by a country mile. Yes you get 25 awesome tracks originally put out on HI records in the early to mid seventies, every track is pure southern soul gold. Was never easy to get his albums in the UK, usually had to import them, buty here there's a chance for we in the UK to get down and groove to an absolute legend at his very best. This trule is an unmissable set, the best ever version of the Al Greene classic,'take Me To The River', as I said is worth the price alone. Here is the inpriration of todays artists such as Ce Lo Green and his like, so go on buy this and enjoy the best soul anywere to be found!
