Expensive but worth it!
This product is a Japanese wood plane (kanna) mounted in a wood box for shaving blocks of dried bonito fish. It is expensive, but it is worth every penny and will proudly be handed down from generation to generation. It is not only functional, but it is also a work of art.

worked like a charm!
Really worked great. You have to shave from the head to the tail or you will end up with dust. Takes a few scrapes on a new fish to get the shavings right. Blade seemed to low at first but was the perfect height after getting going. Really fine piece of equipment. Any issues most likely operator error. Dazed and confused still? Find a U Tube Vid.

Works fantastically.
When it comes to shaving dry bonito, I'm a complete beginner. I made the mistake of buying a cheap shaver and had an absolute miserable time, producing nothing but fine fish powder. I was about to give up, but decided to give this box a shot after visiting their website and seeing the effort that goes into making them. Glad I did. Right out of the box, I was shaving beautiful, long flakes of bonito. So do yourself a favor and don't throw away your money like I did on a cheap shaver and just go with this one. It's expensive, but it's very well made, and most importantly, it works.

Works well!
A bit pricey, but it's not unusual for these things to be expensive. The blade is really sharp, I didn't need to adjust it at all and it makes nice shavings of katsuobushi.

worth the cost if you like miso-shiru
I spent some time reading reviews and studying blog reports about the device (a wooden box with a blade like a carpenter's plane, essentially =鉋) used for shaving (not 'sharpening') katsuo-bushi. The price for this one (the only one on amazon u.s a. far as I saw) seemed extravagant -- there are others out there for much less and shippable at no cost from Japan -- but it appears that the price depends largely on the quality of the steel used for the blade (& thus how often it needs sharpening). Main incentive for buying this item is that I make miso-shiru 5 or 6 times / week; adding up the cost of those little plastic packets of katsuo-bushi shavings (about $5.00 / week?) and comparing that with what it costs to shave your own from a block of dried katsuobushi (miraculously enough also available from amazon) the appliance will pay for itself within a couple of months. And the flavors of the shavings are a lot more intense.

Cheaply made and does not match the photo description
The bottom of the box is not a solid wood piece as in the photo. The bottom feels very cheap. The blade is cheaply made and does not have that beautiful luster that is always presents in high quality Japanese Kanna blades. If this is what they claim to be a high quality blade, then they don’t know what they are selling. I own several high quality Japanese Kanna blades for woodworking, and those are just beautifully made, but this one just doesn't look right. There are still good stuffs in today’s Japan, but I would need to go to Japan directly and choose it in person. This product definitely does not worth the price of $149. This item is NOT returnable.

Well constructed.
Just received this today and started using it straight out of the box. This brought back memories of shaving bonito at my Grandmother's kitchen table while she cooked. Well constructed, however the wood used for the drawer is lighter than the rest of the box and I worry that it will not hold up as well as the rest of the box to heavy use. Time will tell. I didn't need to adjust the depth of the blade and was quickly able to produce enough for a bowl of neko manma. Overall I'm satisfied and looking to purchase one for my brother and his family.
