Midcentury houses today : New Canaan, Connecticut Hardcover – October 21, 2014

If you love important architecture and appreciate people who are willing to live with and love important buildings, then this is a great read. It is fascinating to see how some sensitive owners and architects have altered (respectfully for the most part) 50 year old buildings to accommodate 21st century living patterns. Perfectly illustrated with beautiful photos and floor plans.

This has to be my FAVORITE of all the Mid century Modern books in my Art and Design Library!! The photos are excellent and the background stories about the owners and how the houses have evolved and survived over the ages,. This excellent study of Mid -century houses and history is a wonderful day or evening chair read!!

Sixteen houses are lavishly revealed through exquisite photography, plans and well written introductory essays - representing an interesting assortment of architects. In all of them, the sense of connection to place and especially the visual link to woodlands, streams or landscape gardens links them to a natural setting. A somewhat disappointing aspect of the houses themselves is that only two appear to survive relatively intact in their original as-built form, the others all having been extended and redeveloped - albeit with great respect to the original designs and materials. The authors do tackle this in the first chapter, noting that expectations of space and amenity in the home are vastly different now from sixty years ago. Nevertheless one of the striking characteristics of those Modernist houses was a modesty of scale and economy of means with materials that can easily be lost in meeting contemporary desires.

Of the books that I've seen on mid-century houses, this is one of the best. A must-have for anyone interested in the subject. One thing I really like is that both original and current (post-renovation) floor plans are included. There are so many beautiful and iconic mid-century modern houses and of course this book can't cover them all, so I really hope there will be a second (and third, fourth...) book produced with exactly the same format.

Beautiful book, can't wait to give it to my boyfriend for his graduation. A must for any lover of modern architecture and a perfect coffee table kind of book. Wonderful photos.

A large, and heavy, book with beautiful color photos, mostly full page. This book is one of the better books on the Art Deco period that I have seen recently and would be a welcome addition to any collection.

Did not see an indication in the description that this book was inscribed as well as signed by an author. No problem with the content of the book, just that this copy was clearly destined for someone else and I was surprised by my reaction.

A wonderful perspective of the modern movement in New Canaan, Ct epicenter of modernism and how these house have been adapted to today. And a visual feast for the eyes
