Great Value for the price!!
I am always skeptical of "Import" CD's as the quality varies widely. But let me say this set is of very good sound quality. Some songs are heavy in the bass but a little fine tuning of your equalizer eliminates that. For the money you will be hard pressed to find a better collection of Mr. Charles. A great selection of albums that seem to follow nicely into one another. Bravo guys!!

if you only get one Ray Charles collection, this the one to buy
Collects 6 classic early Ray albums - I was about to buy ONLY Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music vol. 1 for almost the same price as this little boxed set, til I realized it has vols. 1 and 2 of that seminal recording session (disc 2 in this set), plus 4 additional albums! START HERE! Great liner notes as well.

Good Sounding CDs, but boring
The mastering on these CDs is excellent in my opinion, but I'm not too impressed with the content. Sometimes, I just buy CDs to expand my music library, and maybe expose myself to music I wouldn't normally listen to. I had no idea how much slow jazz Ray Charles produced. I don't like slow jazz, so these CDs were a real grind for me to get through. I was expecting a lot more upbeat music.

I ordered this primarily for the ABC Paramount albums, which are great,but i really like the Atlantic sessions, too.

The music on the CD was high quality and very clear.
Much more than I expected. The CD was first used on a bus trip and everyone on the bus totally enjoyed Ray Charles. We have had several request to play the CD on the next bus trip.

A Great Disapointment
Essentials???? Right...only very, very wrong. Couldn't find track listings before purchase. Out of this three CD set only six songs were listed as making the Top 40 or R&B charts. I use Joel Whitburn's Billboard and Cashbox reference books, so I know what songs should have been on this CD collection. Keep looking...I know I will.
