Flawed wood casing
Packaged nice but derwent does not protect their pencils I bought a tin set from blicks and pencil case was bent and broken pencils, so I decided to order them in would case cause I have the lightfast colored pencils in wood case and they are lovely, no damage when it comes to the boxes it was packaged in but I can hear the pencils moving inside, they have foam at top tips of pencils but nothing protecting them from hitting against wood bar that goes across them so cores could be cracked inside if they keep being nicked against it? They are real derwent I compared them with one from blicks art store same color writing and number but the casing in the set is flawed dented little cracks broken tips and worn down tips, Amazon said I can return for another set or total refund but I have a project I need to start on so they gave me credit me a little money back to compensate for messed up pencils in set, these are very good when it comes to lightfastness

Watercolor
I already use Derwent pastel pencils and LOVE Them!!! These Derwent watercolors had the same affect on me… I love the smoothness in which they can be applied. Highly recommend them!!! My teacher Jason Morgan uses them too!!!

Good quality set, with lovely coverage when wet.
Getting down to the most important thing first - what do they look like? I've swatched the pencils in the pic with their corresponding numbers, and used one or two strokes with plain water on an acrylic brush down to show the basic colour for each. The photo was taken on artist quality paper, under a natural light lamp.My thoughts- These pencils react better than expected. They are very smooth to draw with - better than most mid price pencils in my opinion, and reacted beautifully with water. There are perhaps two shades of pink and the three yellows that I feel didnt have enough pigment, but perhaps I needed to do stronger swatches as well. They appear to layer well, so I don't think it's a true deficiency.Using the chinese white (#72) on white paper, it becomes nearly invisible, so it is a good background white. (I unfortunately did not swatch it over black.) The ivory black pencil (#67) is good and strong, with a nice transparency - similar to a lamp black in a regular palette.I also tested lifting them off paper after they've dried, and while I wasn't able to get the paper back to white, I was able to lift the majority of the pigment. Perfect for adding highlights!Lastly, if you like to experiment with salt blooms - I was unable to get a good effect, so you may want to stick with regular watercolours if you enjoy that.I think for the price point, these are good quality and satisfying pencils. Whether you're an established artist or a beginner, I think it's a nice set.

The wood used to make them could be higher quality.
They blend well, but the wood chips a bit when sharpening the color pencils. Some of the color pencils arrived split down the middle.

Fantastic Watercolor Pencils
I enjoy working with these watercolor pencils. I had to adjust how hard I bear down on paper with the pencils because they are softer than other pencils I have used. I love the pigments of these pencils and I absolutely love the wooden box that they came in. This would make an excellent gift for the artist or for a person like me who loves to tinker with all kinds of mediums to create things for my home.

Extra happy with these pencils!
Great watercolor pencils with an excellent color range that is unique to Derwent, which I really like. I had no problem sharpening them with my Kum or Alvin/Dux hand sharpener. The wood did not split or break. The colors are beautiful and there is little color shift from wet to dry. The pigment dissolves easily and works best on smooth or hot pressed paper. It does not require you to scrub the paper to activate the watercolor paint. You may see a little pigment dust when laying down color, its best to blow it off the paper into a dish or the trash than swipe with your hand and smear it. Most pencils do this and it isn't a bad thing, it just is part of the personality of your art tool. If used on cold pressed paper with more tooth/texture be careful not to press into the paper with the pencil or the lines will not completely dissolve, which is great if that is the look you going for but not if you want a smooth color flow. According to Derwent most of these pencils have great lightfast ratings, but this is not noted on the pencils or the tin. There is no literature provided with the set, you have to look it up on their web sight or read the one posted here in Amazon. This is probably a personal preference, but I love that the name of the color is clearly printed on the pencils and they are in numeric order, also printed on the pencils, from 1 through 72. For me it makes it easy to do a color chart and then keep them in order for quick color selection. The pencil color paint d on the tip is pretty accurate. Overall this is a great value choice in the category of artist quality watercolor pencils. The color range, quality, and price, make them a comfortable buy and fun to use because you don't have to feel wasteful if you want to doodle with them. While they are not budget or cheap pencils, the price currently being charged is in my opinion a fair price for an artist grade tool.

I was shocked at how badly they were made.
I've never had a problem with Derwent products, until now.Pros:I love the flat, simple paint job. Non-reflective, I was able to easily read the information on the pencil. The color produced dry was lovely, and when activated with water, vibrant.Cons:The case the lead cores were placed in: Cheap wood, very flakey. The thin layer of paint did not disguise the fact the casing was poorly sanded. I was afraid I'd get splinters! I was also afraid if I sharpened them, they would shatter. If the wood was this poor, what kind of binder did they use on the wood to hold it together? When I did sharpen them, they made the noise of broken spaghetti. The pencil was twitchy in my hand, as the blade glided through the open gaps and ground through the stronger flakes. The paint job on the end of the pencil dried too fast. Drops of paint, that I think should runoff before it drys completely, had solidified on the end. Purely cosmetic, it looked cheap. The leads were misaligned in the center. When sharpened, on one side, the wood never shaved off, leaving a wooden bit that went to the tip of the lead. On the other, it was much farther down.I wrote the seller and told him my experience. He gave me options, I chose to have them replaced, and I had a new set of pencils the next day. I am super happy with the seller. The second set of pencils:Pros:Still love the matte paint job.The color produced is still lovely!Cons:Mainly cosmetic in this set. They were better sanded, no fear of splinters. I could see the seam where the two halves were glued together, but eh, I can with other brands, too. It was fine.Although still not perfect, I found a sharpener that compensated for the lead misalignment, which seems to be better in this set. This set also had the little blobby bits at the end of the pencil. But when I rubbed over them with my thumb, color came off. I think somehow, shards of lead had melted, then hardened and stuck to the end of the pencil, likely though shipping. Cosmetic, does not impact the usefulness of the pencil. This got a 3 star rating because the first set was rubbish, but the second set was good. I split the 5 star rating in half.

Use a quality pencil sharpener.
A few of the nails were split when they arrived so were unusable. Amazon refunded me and I bought another set which were fine. But make sure you use a quality pencil sharpener as recommended by Derwent; apparently using a cheap one can affect the pencils lifetime and quality.

A wonderful box of delights
Already having a few inktense pencils, I found gaps in the colour range. So pleased with this box of 72 as I can now access far more colours and blend others in a new way. Fully recommended for all those who work with textiles or artists materials.Certainly a good value box. It opens up a whole new range of possiblities.

These are truly great water colour pencils and leaves fantastic water colour pictures, blending ability is second to none I have really enjoyed using them. Thank you very much for enabling me to actually become half decent purely because of the standard of the pencils.

Great customer service
The package came damaged and not well protected (not the sellers fault) and as these are soft core I didn't want any of the inside to be broken. I contacted the seller and they sent a replacement that was really well packaged and came perfect. The pencils themselves are a massive step up in the quality I've used before and if you use them professionally or for doll repaints I would highly recommend.
