Q: Will this work on the output of a VFD?

Matthew, a vfd is a Variable Frequency Drive. they are used for phase shifting and/or voltage shifting. my father uses one to convert his 220 single phase to 480 3 phase for his mill in his home garage.

It actually doesn't matter as long as the phase sequence is right. Convention identifies each of the 3 leads as L1, L2, and L3. Your equipment will have terminals labeled as L1, L2, and L3. You would assume L1 goes to L1, L2 to L2 and L3 to L3. This is correct. However, you can also connect L1 to L2, L2 to L3 and L3 to L1. Surprise, you can connect L1 to L3, L2 to L1 and L3 to L2. Each of the 3 variations gives the same result and is correct. What does matter is the sequence. Each line will cycle to peak voltage in rotation. Thats why this is a Phase Sequence Rotation Meter. First L1 goes high, then L2, then L3. If you start with L2, then L3 and L1, each goes high in Rotation. Typically, equipment (a motor perhaps) expects to see "Clockwise" Rotation, sometimes called "Right Hand" Rotation. Should you wish to reverse rotation (for a motor) swap any 2 leads and you get "Counter Clockwise" Rotation, sometimes called "Left Hand" Rotation. Sometimes, one of the leads will register a slightly higher voltage to common/ground than the other two leads. This "Hot Leg" assists with starting a motor. Usually you need not pay any attention to this. Your equipment manual will tellyou if you do. Convention will call for the Hot Leg to be L1. So, hook up your tester, without regard to lead color. If It says "CW" rotation you're good. For convenience, call the Yellow lead L1, Green Lead L2 and Red Lead L3. Wire the associated power leads to the terminals designated L1, L2 and L3 on your equipment. You're good to go.

Q: i see the max voltage is listed for 600v will it survive 690 +/- 4% are the leads 1kv rated? i understand that it wont last as long on 690

I never used it on anything more than 480v. Couldn’t tell you if it would survive 690. As far as the leads being 1kv, it doesn’t say. Only states 600v rated.

neat little meter

As I'm in the UK and a bit rusty on three-phase installations, I put together a little aide-memoir to understand the different phase designations and how the meter leads need to be connected up.UK standard phase rotation is anti-clockwise (RYB), referred to as CCW on meter.Otherwise, the meter helped locate a dead phase (loose connection).

Ideal for what I need to prove

Very affordable compared to the professional level meters out there but was only required to ascertain the correct polarity on the incoming supply to a test panel. This simple device has now confirmed that the prewired Ceeform sockets had been incorrectly wired and identified on numerous 5-core 3P, N & E HO7RNF extension leads for 42kW mobile heaters. It's saved a lot of wasted time when delivering equipment to temporary sites knowing that the equipment was delivered with the correct phase rotation from end-to end.
