Q: Does it use additional radar or just the camera for BSD?

Just the mirror. The BSD works after being set up on the mirror perimeters. The BSD will work without installing the GPS cable as well. The rear exterior camera and the Blind side detection is the main reason I bought this camera mirror. I don't know how it works but it does. I like this function very much and glad I got this camera . Now, you can set up the BSD and as long as you are viewing the rear view on the came the BSD works. If you switch and watch the front view the BSD does not activate . Just as if you are watching the front view on the mirror the front alerts will activate and work but not the BSD. On the split screen view( front and rear at the same time) none of the safety features operate. At least that's what I have found in my camera. So if your driving in slow downtown type traffic , you might want the front view for people or following too close alerts. Normal driving I watch the rear view and the BSD alerts me to blind spot warnings. The BSD has one tone for the left side BSD and a different tone for the right side BSD. So in summary, all of the safety alerts work pretty well. The voice for the front is in English but can tell it's from a foreign translation. I sooo glad I got this camera and system. You still need to use your exterior mirrors and turn your head. This is just a reasonably priced additional safety feature.

Yes. the backup camera is rated IP67 waterproof.
