Substance and Style
Most how-to books tell you how to do things in the style of the person writing the book. This one goes into detail over the different subsets of manga, and how to achieve each look. Anyone that thinks it all looks alike is mistaken! The author knows her history and her art genres :-)There's a lot of good solid advice in here, not just a bunch of tricks and shortcuts. You can create those yourself later, once you get the basics down. And that's what this is, a book of the basics. Each one of them can take up its own book, but this is a good overall base-covering primer on manga. And not just for advanced or professional artists. If your just starting out and want to start out right, you need reference books you are going to want to use and refer to over and over. I keep finding new things I didn't catch the last time I read it through. I'm glad I bought this (and the companion Manga Pro Superstar)

I held this book hostage from the library until my renewals ran out. It's helpful in techniques for face angle placement, learning little (but important) basic like frills and drapery--I find it a helpful reference in my own work.

very useful book
this book goes into how to draw different styles of shojo manga. such as modern style shojo, children's style shojo, illustrative style shojo, Aesthetic style shojo, Retro style shojo, and classic style shojo. It also shows how to draw hair, faces, figures, eyes, and clothes (folds in fabrics too). Over all it is a pretty good book. It seems a bit out of date though but that shouldn't matter too much because you can still incorporate what Colleen Doran teaches in this book.

Always loved this book.
I read this book in libraries a lot and I have to tell you this is an amazing book. I for one like to practise my art by mimicking. Trying different art styles and finding a way to make it my own style. This book covers a good amount of different artist styles and give very detailed step by step instructions and even have full coloured images.

Very good lessons and tips! Not just a copy-out book.
This book is well written and presented. Too many books of this sort seem to just focus on copying according a style, and ignore proper drawing techniques. Colleen Doran really does try to teach, and also has an engaging and readable writing style.
