My trailer finally has some breaking assistance of its own.
I finally got around to putting new brake pads and magnets on the homemade trailer I purchased a few years ago that has some repurposed mobile home axles and this was a perfect fit. For years, it’s always been the brakes on my Chevy K2500 that did all the stopping but after a few heavy loads of with over a yard rocks it was pretty clear I was pushing the envelope on safety with being able to stop quickly or within a reasonable distance when doing about 60-mph. I put it off for a long time because I wasn’t sure exactly what was needed because the old magnets were gone and the pads that were shot didn’t have any size info so I went by just measuring them and matching a pic to what was shown in the listings. Even the wiring was shot so I had to replace it from the trailer connector box back to the wheels. It has tandem axles (only one had brakes) but I had to move the brakes from the rear one to the front because one magnet had fallen off and broke off the end of the actuator rod. Just finished it and everything works though I cheeped out and only purchased one set of shoes (Tekonsha 5000-DX Dexter) because one used set didn’t look too bad and I wanted to make sure it fit before I purchased another one and I was in no hurry so I would have missed the return window. After 50+ years of doing my own repairs I should not have made the mistake of putting new on just one side and I know I should have done so on both sides at the same time. Not doing so just caused me more work because I can’t properly balance the brakes so one side does grab a little more than the other so replace both sides and don’t make the mistake I made… that includes shoes & magnets. Everything is back together now and it works as expected s no complaints with it so it gets 5-stars. The Tekonsha shoes went up in price to a little over 43-bucks (I paid 28-bucks) so I had to shop around and these looked comparable and I really can’t tell them apart and now both sides have an equal amount of padding. One pad is used for stopping in forward and the other for reverse so one will wear much faster than the other. The shoes aren’t like the typical ones because they don’t have a pivot point so use plenty of grease where metal meets metal and be sure the pivot arm moves freely.Installation note… one shoe has a pad 4-inches longer than the other and instructions state to mount that one on the back side of your wheel but that really depends on your type of wheel and braking system. My wheels are repurposed mobile home axels that are activated by an electro magnet that grabs the inner side of the drum, pulls a lever to the rear and engages the pad that’s on the front side of the wheel so that’s where I installed the one with the longer pad. I can only engage one shoe at a time… one for forward and one for reverse. If both pads engage when you brake then the instructions are likely correct. Mobile homes are very common in the west and many are double-wide so if they go on a foundation the axles are pulled and are pretty cheap so they’re common on home built trailers. The problem is that the brakes are made pretty much for a one way ride so they tend not to be built to last long and replacing them requires a lot of work since the back plate is welded to the axle. If I was planning on using the trailer a lot I would not have purchased one with this type of braking system but most use Dexter and that seems to be a pretty reliable product based on what’s on my trailer.

made in china
I used these shoes on a travel trailer with Dexter axles and brakes. I purchased only 1 set because of a bearing seal failure. The discription did not say where they are made or that they do not come with 2 pins you will need for the auto adjuster and the primary/secondary shoe cable. I heated my old pins and pressed them out and installed into the replacement brake shoe. Have not towed the trailer yet, so cannot comment on the performance, but I doubt it will be noticable with the 3 other brakes working. The fit was as the original and they did come with new hold down springs and retainers, but no other hardware.
