Even better than volume one!
If you purchased volume one of these Murry/Fallberg tales and plan on buying volume two I've got great news for you: the stories here are even more exciting than those in volume one (#3 in the Disney Masters series)! The quality of the reproductions is just as perfect but Fallberg greatly improved the quality of his writing (Murry's artwork remains top-notch but I feel that he too was beginning to enjoy the stories more and was devoting more time and effort to creating background detail and atmosphere). “The Lost City”, “The Marvelous Magnet”, “The Vanishing Railroad” and “Yesterday Ranch” are fun, exciting stories. Some may not know that while these serials were appearing in WDC&S Fallberg and Murry would occasionally create new, long stories to be featured in Mickey Mouse magazine. These stories are every bit as exciting as the serials that are being printed here. Will Fantagraphics ever get around to printing them? I don't know, but I certainly hope so. Meanwhile, enjoy this highly recommended collection!

Fine Collection of Mickey Mouse Stories
For a short period of time, I bought up a BUNCH of Disney Masters book, but the quality was so all over the place the I eventually gave up on the series. I’ve been sitting on this book for several years and some of the books are still in the shrink wrap. It was some of the European creators that I really found underwhelming. Paul Murry was not a European, having been born in Missouri, and he is the star of the show in this edition. There is a nice four page bio on Murry at the back of the book while the writer of all these stories, Carl Fallberg, does not even get a mention on the cover. The poor writers always get maligned by their omission.I’ll give some high praise and say that these stories have a very Carl Barkian feel to them except with Mickey and Goofy instead of Donald Duck and crew. In fact, I have a feeling that Fallberg may have been metaphorically leaning overs Barks shoulder. That’s ok. Emulation is easier said than done. I’m not saying the stories here are of the quality of Barks, but for the most part they are pretty good, and Murry’s art has the same clean consistent style of Barks. These stories are all from the mid-50’s and I love these older stories, long before the internet and smart phones and video games. “The Yesterday Ranch” and “The Vanishing Railroad” are examples of stories that really feel of their era. In fact, the Vanishing Railroad is based around a classic steam locomotive that even in the mid 1950’s was considered an antique.“The Lost City” was very Barksian, but not that memorable. Even now, I had to go back and refresh my memory and I only read it a week or so ago. I’d say that it was with “The Vanishing Railroad” that I started to appreciate Fallberg’s storytelling. These certainly aren’t stories for the ages but they’re light and fun. My favorite story was “The Great Stamp Hunt”. I just kind of enjoyed Mickey and Goofy travelling to some small island to find an ultra-rare stamp and coming across a postman out in the jungle who hasn’t handled a letter in years. “The Pirates of Tabasco Bay” had a pretty good premise and again, it takes place on an island. It just lost steam rather quickly. Overall, I give these stories relatively high marks. They aren’t legendary, but I found them entertaining.

Mickey Mouse Serials of 1950s and 60s by Paul Murry and Carl Fallberg partnership
Intricate art and absorbing plots are the feature of these mostly three part Mickey and Goofy adventure serials. The Paul Murry and Carl Fallberg partnership has been to Mickey Mouse and Goofy, as Carl Barks has been to Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge.Paul Murry was the artist who engaged us with his intricate rain drops, detailed steam locomotives, and inviting forest landscapes illustrating the engaging adventure plots by Carl Fallberg. We could never put them aside until read through each absorbing adventure. Many thanks to the Publishers for bringing these Walt Disney classics back to print.
