Nice inverter. Bought as a replacement. Easy to install
Nice easy to install inverter. The seller was awesome helping navigate the UPS issues caused by the pandemic. I will add one install tip. There is a setting to match your local power grid. It is pretty cryptic. I tried a few of them and the inverter wouldn’t sync to the grid. Then I found one that was called “worst case” (not kidding). The inverter came right up and functions well. So note that you should not expect help from SMA as they will only help you if you are a certified installer. I like their gear but generally dislike companies with those policies.

No support
Was simply replacing an existing inverter that quit w but wasn’t getting support from Sunny boy. Attempted to return but was refused. At least I was able to repair my old inverter.

Didn’t work. Returned to manufacturer.
After modifying the existing solar array to receive the replacement inverter it did not work. Actually, it may be working, but the LED screen and indicator lights needed to commission the unit did not come on. Tested and retested all of the AC & DC connections, but nothing happened. Tried to contact the manufacturer, but they are in Germany and did not respond. It was ordered from Amazon so I didn’t know who the supplier was until I returned the unit. It is possible that nothing more than the little digital readout panel needed replacement, but I will never know. I hope the supplier will be able to repair and resell the inverter. Giving it three stars based on the lack of service. Now awaiting the delivery of a different inverter which will require installation, again.

Poor quality worse support
With in a few years of setting up our solar plant with the SMA Sunnyboy inverter it just stopped working. I contacted customer service and confirmed it is still under the factory warranty. Sadly the company who had installed the power station has gone out of business. SMA couldn’t fix the inverter even when they got direct access through connecting my labtop directly through the Ethernet port everything read as —— no info. At that point despite still being well with warranty the agent told me I would just have to find someone to troubleshoot electrical parts. When I reminded the agent Liam that it was still under warranty and that they should be selecting and paying for the company to come out and fix the issue. He told me no, and said I would just need to hire someone to come redo their work, and pay for the whole think out of pocket. What is the point of having a warranty if a company isn’t going to be represented directly, or have a listened partner to come do the repairs in a situation like this. If SMA would like to contact me please send a message.

Inverter is great, seller mis-shipped item but we got it worked out
The seller shipped the item to the wrong address but I was able to retrieve it. Seller was quite responsive and it was an easy mistake to make so not docking any stars. The item itself is the SMA 5.0-US, replacing an older 3kW unit which will be moved to another location. As far as grid-tie inverters go these are among the best. No fan, 3 MPPTs on this model, very high efficiency. It isn't a hybrid unit... SMA is a bit behind the times on the newer hybrid technologies, so keep that in mind. It's a solid high-voltage grid-tie inverter. In anyacse, the ports are close enough to the old unit that I didn't have to mess with the conduits too much. The mounting system on the new unit is easier than the old system. The wifi interface is basic but has all the essential data. Installation and setup was straight-forward. These units are designed as workhorses, not pretty flowers.--Update: Still going strong! I used the SPS (Secure Power Supply) feature for the first time during recent storm-related power failures. I have to say, it worked pretty well. I had to be careful to give plenty of margin owing to the cloudy day but I was able to recharge all of my power stations from the SPS and keep everything going, including the fridge, without having to resort to a generator. So kudos on that.
