Jane Pettigrew's World of Tea: Discovering Producing Regions and their Teas

Beautiful Volume on Tea Throughout the World
When I ordered Jane Pettigrew's World of Tea, I expected a stunning coffee table book, but it's that and so much more. The book is divided into seven chapters, the first on the origins of tea, and the next six on the tea producing regions of the world: North America, Central and South America, Africa, Europe, Asia, and Oceania. Pettigrew gives an overview of tea production around the world, all while sharing fascinating stories from tea history--the Portuguese introduction to tea in the 16th century on the Island of Macao, the connection between colonialism and tea production in Africa, and a glimpse of small tea farms in the United States. The volume's greatest contribution may be its 200+ pages devoted to Asia. Beginning with China, the birthplace of tea, Pettigrew leads the reader through the different tea producing regions of the continent, including but not limited to India, Japan, South Korea, and Thailand. She not only explains the history of tea in each area, but provides descriptions of types of tea and main varietals. The maps are extremely helpful in visualizing the different regions, and the summaries in the sidebars allow for quick reference.Jane Pettigrew's World of Tea would make a lovely gift for a dedicated tea enthusiast or for a new tea drinker who is ready to go deeper into the fascinating world camellia sinensis.

Great Book!!!
I have all of Jane's books in my library. This new one is exceptional and all encompassing including Sakuma Brothers Farm in Washington state. A fews years ago I stopped by their farm stand. I also had the pleasure of meeting Jane at the Tea Conference. If you love tea be sure to purchase this book. Loved the larger maps that are included. This is a very large book and worth every penny.

A few minor errors but I still rank it as one of the better tea books out there
A well though out out book that covers even the most obscure tea regions. A few minor errors but I still rank it as one of the better tea books out there!

Detailed reference but makes for difficult reading straight through
Working her way through 6 continents this text provides details of each tea producing region, descriptions of the land, and a map of the major areas. In its effort to be comprehensive, its readability suffers, for example there are three pages for tea producers in Alabama, with less that 22 acres (While Kenya with over 400,000 acres only gets 5 pages) The sidebars on number of gardens, area of cultivation, terrain, altitude, main cultivars, types of tea, was interesting, but I think area and production would have been well served in a large table to allow comparing areas (and there is a mix of hectares and acres even in same state) . The maps and introduction to each continent and country are very good, and provide history, and cultural context, e.g. “Tea first arrived in Japan in the first decade of the 9th century when Buddhist monks such as Eichu, Saicho, and Kukai brought tea seeds with them when the returned from periods of study in Chinese monasteries. ‘’” Wonderful pictures of the landscapes and the people involved in tea such as the Yi people in China, Sri Lankan tea garden with waterfall, or view of the Nilgiri tea gardens in India. I’d recommend reading the description of each country, paging through the pictures, then using the book as a reference to specific teas that you order. I think an index by tea names would help this.

Sliced cover : ( but otherwise decent book
Came with a giant slice down the cover....for a fairly pricey new book, this is really disappointing. Flaw aside, the book is very helpful for its global presentation of different tea producing regions. Its information on brewing is much more limited. Has side bars on yixing teapots, and gong fu and gai wan brewing is somewhat helpful but fairly limited. So novices seeking extensive guides on process might look for other guides. Is oversize with a lot of white space, which is visually pleasing but makes it a large book
