BLACK+DECKER BESTA510 6.5 Amp 14 in. AFS Electric String Trimmer/Edger

This is my second corded (b+d ) strimmer. This one is more user friendly than previous model( which had the motor at cutter end inducing higher fatigue). In this new model motor in switch side and not over hung. New model has long cord. My apprehension was on bend shaft which is inefficient and may generate more heat. ( New model 700 W compared to older model of 600 W). It is so, but not a great disadvantage. One can take a break which is beneficial for man and m/c. This model has one side line( 2mm) for normal use , but for thick bush, 2 sided one more set is given. I haven't understood the design philosophy of single line cutting which induces more vibration. M/c supplied line ( 2mm) was limited in length and later I used available 1.6 mm line. It did not work properly, the spool unwounded. There is a strong reco from b+d to use 2mm line only. Quite unfortunately, both design use a reduction gear which is non metallic. That will be the item first to damage and life get limited. I don't know why b+d cannot improve on it. The mc comes with square pin where as in India, we are having round socket. So , an interface adaptor needed or we have cut the cable and replace with round pin. Line auto feed is working, but I have not understood the principle behind it. This m/c is more rugged than previous version, still spool cap can get damaged,if it hit ground or stone. ( end of life) By and large my apprehension on bend shaft which delayed my purchase is not a concern. Those who are buying, pl stock consumables like line, spool etc. My previous model, I could not get spare parts as model is withdrawn. Users, pl use gum boot, gogles and cap and enjoy safe working.

Machine is good. 900W power (is more than the power of a normal mixer grinder which is around 850W) is enough for grass upto 1.5 to 2 ft height. Only problem is with the spares. Just one packet containing just about ten odd 35mm long nylon wire strips with the locking mechanism at it's middle is provided as spare with the machine. This one enables two wire strands at the head. And if you are cutting relatively stronger grass, this perishes in no time. There are no spares available online. Then you will have to solely depend of the other single spool which reduces the cutting efficiency as it enables only a single wire cutting head. But this can be replenishmened with any 2mm nylon wire. Happy with the product, problem is the lack of availability of spares.

Using it for more than a year, it is a very good product

The product itself works well, but the biggest problem is that important accessories like the spool cap and other spares are simply not available anywhere in India. Without the spool cap, it becomes almost impossible to use this trimmer effectively. I don’t understand how a reputed brand can sell such a product without ensuring that the basic spares are easily available to customers. Please make the spool cap and other accessories available for purchase in India. Otherwise, how are we supposed to manage using this tool in the long run? It feels very unfair to invest in a premium product and then struggle to find the most basic parts required to operate it. Until this issue is fixed, I cannot recommend this product to anyone in India.

Excellent Product

I bought this grass cutter after lots of research, its total value for money, very powerful and no heating issue. Have used petrol based grass cutter earlier but had lots of problems with the engine starting and handling but this machine is perfect, easy to handle, easy to assemble and no maintenance. If I talk about area of improvement I think after continuous using for long time in your arms it feels heavy, if a shoulder strap would have been fitted it would have been more better.

Got it today and tested it out for an hour. The weed eater or brush cutter whatever you call it is best suited for 2mm lines, twisted is better but if you don't have it go with 2mm round line. The spool mechanism is nice and updated and I don't see it giving out too much line as others have mentioned. The chord is also around 7 to 8 meters albeit non detachable but UK plug, this is actually a plus as it comes with a fuse built in. In terms of power it is like a 25cc honda one and no where near as powerful as say a 35cc 4 stroke or 50cc 2 stroke. But that's okay, it's designed with a purpose and does not have capabilities to attach blades. While you can fit 3mm line, I would not recommend it as it puts unnecessary load and even my older 52cc one never spun it perfectly. The single line spool does create vibration but is easily manageable. For best use case, owing to the trimmer spinning clockwise, always try and cut from left to right instead of right to left. The edging functionality with the wheel is also great. The old 50cc one I had, or more so petrol ones in general have a lot of maintenance and I spent more time fixing then cutting, this one is better than battery operated ones as run time is virtually infinite, sound is low and if your house is solar powered, practically green. Lastly, while it takes getting used to, the 3.5kg weight is a godsend. Time will tell how it holds up but I'm deducting a star as parts for it are expensive and harder to get and it seems B&D designed it as such so you keep buying new ones.

Well folks🙂 I have to tell you this has been a nice weed eater that cuts really good and it's LIGHTWEIGHT and it's powerful👍 and at a PRICE that can't be beat...it's way more powerful than some battery and electric weed eaters that I have.. like a Ryobi... And supposedly a commercial grade Ryobi $200 😤.. Anyway 🙂 This electric weed eater is very good and I'll take that PEPSI challenge any day 😀 when comparing it to some other weed eaters PLUS it doesn't USE LINE like other electric weed eaters that I've used.. at least that's been my experience.. This is a KEEPER weed eater from Black & Decker👍....it handles tall grass and even some hedge... though it probably shouldn't be used for hedge but it's TOUGH 😀 and better than any battery weed eater I used especially with the power and cutting... The power alone and convenience of NOT rushing through the job with the battery pack and charging ect imo is worth the cord drag 🙂... and much better than a battery weed eater or other electric weed eaters.. This just cuts better 👍... With MORE power consistently and constantly through the whole job... So in conclusion 🙂 the Black & Decker BESTA510 weed eater in my opinion is a KEEPER and this model has been around for a while which speaks for itself not to mention Black & Decker has been around for years.... This weed eater OVERALL (pound for pound ) is a solid performer with many mostly liking this weed eater and Black & Decker products overall.. Thanks for reading🙂.. Had to replace my cordless Strummer with something more robust but didn't want a petrol version. This is a fairly good mix of all the qualities I look for in a Strummer. I was pleasantly surprised by its power ...managed to get through tough briars and ferns which I didn't think it would. It did take a lot of line to do that and with hindsight I should have used thd stronger line that came with it. Only issue is I'm 6 foot and the handle even when fully extended is not quite long enough but that's a minor inconvenience and really no trouble when strumming slopes ...which I generally am. I've only used it for a couple of months but its done the job well and I'm impressed so far.
