An absolutely fascinating account of the excavation of this hilltop fortress of Herod the Great and the story of the Zealots last stand against the might of the Roman Army. A must read for anyone interested in the archaeology of the Holy land. Easy to read and understand and the illustrations are aligned with the text instead of all in a group in the middle. Saves a lot of page turning! Get the hardback version, it lays flat so you can read it during breakfast.

History brought to Life
This Book about Masada is as removed from what could be a desert-dry archeological site account and a riveting read as the Earth is from the Sun. The author describes in clear and very readable writing, the history of the last stand of the Jewish nation against the Roman Empire with its dramatic suicidal ending then goes on the tell the story of the rediscovery and excavation of the site, from early explorers to his own definitive work on the site. Aided by volunteers from almost every corner of the earth, all paying their own travel expenses just to be involved. That is the magic of Masada. The finds reveal that the earlier chronicler Josephus Flavius (long thought to be an extravagant myth ) had indeed got it “right”. The book was delivered expertly packed and described as “sanitised” full marks to the supplier.
