Chemical PE Practice Exam #1: Full-Length Practice Exam

If you are studying for the PE - Chemical you should go through these problems multiple times. These are very similar to the actual exam.

If the NCEES practice Chemical Exam is 5 stars, I give it to this one 4 stars. It helps you in navigating through the PE Chemical Handbook better than the NCEES one and find comments and charts in the Handbook that you did not notice it before, also have some questions that are not like the NCEES'. When I first try the NCEES' I got a 40% score, then I took this one 3 hours a day during 3 days and I got a 70% score... I think it is a good practice for the PE Chemical Exam...

Good practice. I recommend buying it. I thought it would be too outdated because of the new cbt format, but it actually DOES refer to the cbt reference handbook content a lot! It is a little easier than the ncees practice exam, but not too easy. I was able to finish this exam in probably 6 hours (didn’t need 8 hours). This may be because there are a lot of “practical knowledge” problems and not as many calculations problems. There are only a couple problems that you would not be able to solve with the new cbt format. Thanks for the extra practice!

The book is more to the easy side. About 50% of the questions are related to direct equations in the reference book. These equations were not covered by the official NCEES practice exam. There are about 30% of the questions are not related to anything. Just random questions about very specific things that there is no way you know. Overall, It is a useful source and I recommend buying it.

Most of the problems were helpful in reviewing concepts and were similar to problems on the actual exam. However, starting in 2018, the only reference material allowed on the PE Chemical exam is the NCEES-provided Reference Handbook. Some problems/solutions refer to other manuals, and not all of that information is available in the new reference manual. As a result, there are question types in this practice that you will not see on the real exam. When the Reference Handbook is referenced in the solutions, not all the sections are accurate with the latest Handbook edition.

My opinion is the difficulty and format is closest to the real PE exam out of all the exam prep books I bought, besides the NCEES practice exam. It's probably on the easy side, but I would recommend.

Working through prepping for the PE now. So far, this was easier than the 2017 NCEES PE practice test I did, which is supposedly similar to the latest (2021?) version. This practice test had a lot of different types of problems, so it makes for a great supplement to the NCEES practice test. A big chunk of the questions are more conceptual questions, many of which require knowledge of common industry codes and standards. Not sure what to expect for these on the actual test, but I'm sure thinking through some of those questions will come in handy.I did find a couple errors:Q23: Problem statement says "sand" when the packing described is metal spheres.Q11: A is a possible answer for a shell & tube exchanger if piped with countercurrent flow. The statement ruling out answer A would rule out all other answers if piped in concurrent flow.Q62: Not an error, but the equation used in the solution exists in a different form in the latest revision of the reference manual and the solution is no longer straight forward with the equations available.
