very nice protective case, my top choice
updated to 4*'s 11/29/14. I emailed otterbox way back then asking if it was a glitch or on purpose - no response. I like the case but it is annoying that there is no rubbery /ridge on the main face of the phone. I still think it might be the best available but -1* for annoying me sometimes in that regard. My last otterbox never annoyed me. So primarily a rating for future models to be taken seriously/relative to otterbox brand defender case expectations.-----here's the rundown of my observations in no particular order.-The prior reviewer was right that for a few moments after i put this on i noticed i had to tap slightly for the protector, it is very minor, i quickly adapted without effort.-This screen protector has kept out all debris. My Note 2 protector i constantly had pet hair getting under the screen and have not run into that yet. I have been using for a few days in fuzz prone areas like the couch, bed, and sometimes in the yard w the dogs.-The color is more pure pink, not bright coral color i perceive on my Note 4 screen. While this case isn't the definition of perfection, i do love it, and would chose it again. It is rubbery with a subtle texture on the edges and a cooler looking texture on the back. Its squishier by far than the slim line case i used Prime for so the phone wouldn't be so slippery. Plus, without a case the pad beneath my thumb kept hitting the menu cap-sense key.I retain great and contoured access to the oxygen/heart rate sensor. My chargers plug in, nice dust port protection. Its easy to type now.Hear fine. This is an excellent case for potential drops, my last otter defender (note 2) even protected my phone from some surprise dog slobber. Grips the table enough that a bump to phone or furniture wont slide it off, though this is less perfect than the last one as the rubbery front edge doesnt protrude beyond the white plastic. I usually leave my phone face down on the side table, so i don't appreciate that change. It is unlikely the phone would fall landing so flat as to land on the hard plastic but i'd feel better if it protruded. I looked at a lot of cases before i selected this and still believe it was the top choice for my needs. I purchase a case as my insurance vs solely a look. This layering of hard plastic and rubbery plastic will absorb and helps resist twisting/torsion.Yeah its big if you clip it on, but i deem the value of the large visible area more important than the bulk. I carry it in a purse, and if needed around the house it fits in my back pockets.I was tempted by the pelican name on another case but the style bugged me and i wasn't sure it would be as easy to maintain effortless grip, which i also ought note makes it easier on the hands when using extensively._________________________________________thats the end of my review. i am surprised by the difficulty posting a review on the otterbox site - i had to cut it down to get the computer to let me submit my review. it said i had inappropriate language so would not go to the preview screen without cutting off the entire bottom of the review. in the guidelines on the side it mentioned attitude next to inappropriate language). i thought i was being analytical and appropriate. so just against the automatic censorship of sorts on their site, i wanted to post what i wrote, after i edited a few words that i was haplessly guessing could have been the problem. And to let people know that this nice manufacturer is being too strict on what is allowed thru their system.1st the sole design issue i found, putting it first because i want the designers to notice and fix this by cutting the mold a little deeper. The white plastic on the screen side protrudes a smidge further than the rubbery plastic. Everything works great minus i like to leave my phone face down at night so my cat doesn't walk across the button and turn it on, and use your rubbery case to prevent it from slipping around (such that it might entice the cat to bat it off the table). this surprise shouldn't be a drop issue as it should hit a corner vs flat.I had the defender for my Note 2 which saved it from drops and once dog licking it. it might have been fine but i still was glad i had coverage of the seams and dust ports, cause it might have saved it too.On the Note 2 i constantly had dog hair and occasionally a small grit of sand under the screen. but after i finally cut the screen protector out i noticed the screen held smudges far better, i had not noticed myself cleaning smudges off the protector. On the Note 4 screen (protector) i wipe off smudges some but it isn't nearly as bad as on the glass. i have not had any pet hair or debris make it in thru the front button, as i was very worried when i saw it cut out again. i have used it with dogs on the couch and lap so it is definitely improved. i wish it would sit 100% flush but that's an awfully hard thing to accomplish if even realistic. depends on the tolerances of the phone aside from their own case tooling. for the first few moments when i put the case on id touch and not get a response. it was the slightest gap off the screen. it is not at all like you have to really tap, still the slightest contact pressure suffices, and when reading this take it in the context that i didn't even recall this till i left my review on amazon and read the sole review before me. other than a moment of uh oh whats wrong then it was a few moments till adapting was complete. it is not effortful. The textures are nice and grippy and have been remaining clean. It is effortless to hold. without the case i found this phone slippery. this case & a crappy slim case that i used to tide me over till this was released solved the problem when holding in landscape mode the pad on my palm would bump the menu cap sense key.the oxygen/heart rate sensor is still very accessible with a contoured recess.lastly, the pink case is purely hot pink. on my Note 4 it looked as if it might be a bright coral.I looked at all i could find before choosing this, and would choose it again. i considered one other option available prior to this (i removed the word company, sea bird case, military), yet i like the way this looks, plus i have experience with a defender case taking real drops and i knew what their rubbery stuff felt like from my last case vs having to guess.p.s. to otterbox - i never got the notification when u released the color combo i wanted, though i did preorder thru amazon anyways.

Better Than a Potato.
When I received my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and realized that the precious screen, sturdily constructed (yet seemingly susceptible to damage from long drops down onto porcelain tile) might need a little bit of protection from clumsy old 'Mr. Hot Potato Hands' me.Enter: Otterbox Defender.A product that lives up to its name. First, a little about why I didn't go for a 4 star rating: I love it, despite the flaws. Since I would buy it again in a cinch, I have to go with 5 stars, because I believe that's what the ratings system means. I'll leave it up to you to decide if you want to read the rest of the review. What do I like about it?First, it's got a great feel to it. I like the tactile sensation. It's not something where I would say it's the best thing ever to hold, but it's not slippery, and it lends a nice heft to the device to make it feel more like a sturdy "this is something that's ok to accidentally drop" device than a "I had really better not drop this" device.Second - and I learned this from experience - my device is still in pristine condition even after several drops. You might think that this case would feel like a hot potato from the amount of times I've dropped it. But no! it's cool to the touch and doesn't show a single sign that it's actually a potato. It also doesn't show a single sign that it's even been dropped, which a potato would have by now.Third, it comes with a clip, which is almost essential since the phone, like an Idaho potato, struggles to fit into my pockets. This allows me to have the comfort in the knowledge that my phone is always nearby, even at work, where I'm not supposed to use my phone. (Except on breaks, naturally.)The Flaws:First, it comes with a clip, which is a problem, because, like an overly microwaved potato it has a tendency to explode off my belt and clatter to the hard, porcelain floor (Which is everywhere now, it seems.). While the Otterbox Defender seems fully capable of withstanding all these long, hard drops, I worry about the concussive damage to the internals of the phone. The biggest issue is that, perhaps from the make and model of my body (somewhat potato-y), I tend to force the clip clasp into it's locked position. Then gravity asserts the law, and the phone falls at its earliest convenience, which also so happens to be at an inconvenient time.Perhaps if I clipped the clasp to something other than my belt, I'd have different results, but I didn't have this issue with the Otterbox Defender for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3, and I used it in exactly the same fashion.Second, cost. It's a bit on the pricier side, so if that's a factor, then look for a used one. I had to talk myself into the purchase, and I'm glad I did. Conclusion:I really like it, despite the frequent clattering. (I mean at least once a week here.) I feel like it protects the phone exceedingly well and shows a quality and durability that I'll be reminiscing about in 15 years, complaining while whittling away on a potato, that "they don't make them like they used to".Recommendation:Get it now, and reminisce about how good it was later. You don't have to take my word for it: try one for yourself. I don't think you'll regret it. But this is coming from the person who titled this review "Better Than a Potato". So, you've gotta take that into consideration, too.
