The Vegetarian Bistro
I'm not a vegetarian and I LOVE this cookbook! I try new receipes all the time and go back to my favorites over and over. Clearly Marlena Spieler is in love with France, its people and most certainly its food! The author has a playful writing style introducing each regional receipe with a story of where she collected the receipe while bistro hopping through out her travels in France. The individual receipes have just a few ingredients and are easy to follow and execute. This being a French cookbook, butter and cream are often called on, but in my opinion they are not abused, so not to worry over hardening arteries too much. Many dishes use a lot of garlic and that is just fine with me, but you can just tone it down some if not a garlic fan.I've prepared appetizers, first courses, & main courses and have never once been disapointed with the outcome. I'm not a dessert maker and rarely make soups so I can't speak to those receipes, but if the other delectable dishes I've made are a hint, then the soups and desserts should be very tasty indeed.Enjoy & Bon appetite !

This is a great book; the author did a fabulous job of providing the recipes, as well as painting a beautiful mental picture of French bistro visits. I can't wait to start making these; the substitutions provided for some recipes, for example for foods that can't be found other than in France, were very helpful. I would recommend it to those who want to try French cooking in a way that's very approachable.

A great resource for creating a vegetarian French menu.
I like the authors style and she has some really good recipes/ideas in here. Some of her recipes come out great and some weren't at all what I was hoping for. The recipes are very easy to follow and this has been a really fun book.

excellent book
Living in France myself, I know how little the french know about vegetarian cuisine and how poorly they serve it in the restaurants. This book gives you all the typical bistro dishes translated into "vegetarian". I am having so much fun making them and they all taste great. There are little to no french (good) vegetarian cook books, Thank you Marlena for having made one... May be one day it will be translated into french... But that still may take a long, long while...

Fantastic recipes
I received this cookbook as a gift years ago, and it quickly became one of my favorites! It got lost in our last move, so I had to order another copy. Nobody in my family is vegetarian, but the food in this book is so delicious that my pack of carnivorous boys didn't miss the meat!

Nice addition to my cookery books
Absolutely lovely little book, packed with great veg recipes (along with authors stories of her personal love for France and the food there). Lots to pull from for Meatless Mondays, and if you've a vegetarian coming to dinner it's priceless: no more side-dishes only for your non-mammal-ingesting friends.

Inspiring, inexhaustible supply of recipes
I have many cookbooks, and I love cooking from them, but if there's one that I return to time and time again then it's this one. Partly because I love French food and am largely vegetarian (a fairly uncommon combination), but mostly because there is a huge and varied range of recipes described here, all written with a passion for the food, accompanied by short anecdotes ideas for variations.True, the author is somewhat keen on her butter and cream, and the jacket photo of her should serve as a warning of what this can do to your figure, but you can freely take liberties with any of the recipes, substituting and reducing quantities as you see fit. And on the occasions when nothing but a complete blow-out on comfort food will do, well then use the whole damn block of butter and tub of cream, your taste-buds will thank you for it.A cliché but... I cannot recommend this book strongly enough. It's wonderful, and has changed my cooking habits for life.
