The boot slips on easily, and I don't think it will fall off without a lot of tugging. This gives the cup some cushion, and may protect it from bottom dents. I don't know what to do with the caps though. I guess if you have spare straws, you can use them on those but I can't see needing them on the straw that's in use, as it has a mouthpiece at the top.
