First, let me say that this is a fantastic product. I was surprised to get something so nice for the price. Now let me say that their history of the gorget is waaaay off. It has nothing to do with the American Civil War. It has everything to do with the colonial period. This item will not protect your throat unless you're 5 years old. Gorget of the period represented by this item had shrunk in size and were decorative only. They were worn by officers of French and British armies as well as by Prussian mercenaries and Native American leaders a casting of this quality (very minor imperfections around holes) would have been given to Indians. It could be either French or British Indian trade but for military use by whites it is more in line with the French style.

The gorget has a highly polished brass finish which can be engraved to match many purposes such as initials, a family or unit crest. It also lends itself to numerous methods of suspending the piece from the neck. Good buy. I also bought one as a gift for a friend.
