A History of Hong Kong
Brilliant, educational and very interesting; the best account I have ever read. It covers intensively not only HK's birth and history but also the attitudes, especially in the early years, of the British Administration/Politicians in the UK towards HK itself and its people, and the reports received from their staff based there who had first-hand knowledge of what was going on. Eurasian, born in HK, lived there until I was 22 which included its occupation by the Japanese, I highly recommend this book; I am sure it would make one think and perhaps question.

True history but it reads like novel
An excellent book on the history and development of Hong Kong. This is a great book to fill in all those gaps on how Hong Kong grew into it's country state status. It is the perfect partner for your trip to HKG!

HONG KONG REVISITED
We lived in HK for 3 years so reading the history filled in the gaps of our experience of the place. Not that you can ever really know it.

Tons of Info But Not an Easy Read.
This is more of a political text book than a readable social history book which is what I was hoping for. Fantastically informative with dates and names but never gets to grips with the people of Hong Kong and how things changed for them. ( as with Martin Booths auto-biography of when he was growing up in HK). Too technical!

Great history of Hong Kong
Great history of Hong Kong. Rather apologetic on the British side, but if you've read plenty of other books condemning the Opium Wars, this is an impressive, thorough history that provides a bit of balance (but read with a pinch of salt). This is considered the #1 history of Hong Kong, and the reputation is deserved. Wish there was more about the late 20th century.
