Taylor is, of course, an iconic name in scale making. But before you buy this scale you should probably know that these are not going to be nearly the same quality is Taylor Scales that were made in Illinois back in the pre-2000s. After Taylor was acquired by HoMedics in 2003, virtually all of their digital and analog scales were sent to be made overseas. Having said that, this one comes closer than any other I've seen to matching the quality of old-school Taylor scales. The first thing you should probably know about the scale is that it's BIG. At about 6" x 10" x 9" it takes up a lot of room on a kitchen counter. Not ideal for people like me with small kitchens, but if you have a good sized kitchen it's nice to have an old-school scale similar to what you'd find in grocery stores and professional kitchens. The dial has big, easily readable numbers and lets you measure things in pounds, ounces, and grams. When you take it out of the box, there is a bit of assembly you have to do. My first instinct was to remove the cardboard that was stabilizing the top bar, only to read in the manual that I was supposed to keep it in place. I quickly put it back hoping I didn't mess anything up (I didn't, but it would have been nice to have some kind of warning outside of the tiny instructions in the manual). The first step is to install the frame that holds the metal bowl onto the support bar. To do this, you need to unscrew a pair of screws from the support bar and use them to screw the frame on. If you want to store the scale later, you'll need to do this in reverse. As with most scales of this kind, there's a knob at the top you can use to calibrate the scale. Mine came off about 1-2 pounds but a few turns of the dial and it was back to zero. I did notice that the dial would often not return back to exactly zero (something you never would have seen in a pre-2000 Taylor scale), but over time I didn't let that bother me too much. You'll of course want to zero it out with the metal bowl on top (which weighs in at about 4 ounces). I tried weighing a few things and the scale is definitely very accurate. One thing I love about it is that it's analogy; you don't need to worry about charging it or plugging it in or the invariable loss of precision that digital scales often have. My experiences with Taylor scales, both kitchen and bathroom scales, has been hit or miss in recent years. In this case, it's a definite hit. I feel good using this not just in the kitchen, but for weighing things like small packages. It doesn't have a lot of features, of course, but it does very well at the one feature it's supposed to do. Highly recommended.
