Milk-drinking toddler likes it; Nutritional info vs. fresh milk
We've tried this and the ready-to-drink version of the same.First, the good:My formula-hating toddler likes it as much as fresh milk, a first.Shelf stable powders are convenient to take along or keep on hand as backup, don't require water or mixing like dry formulaContains DHA (how much? package doesn't say) in the form of fish oilNeutral:More fat and calories than milk. Whether this is a pro or con will depend on whether you have a good eater. If your toddler doesn't eat much, this might be a great way to slip them some extra calories. The powder contains a lot more non-milk ingredients than the ready-to-drink, but that may just be a function of removing all the water.Bad:The cost. This is the big one. At $.62/serving with Subscribe & Save and Amazon Mom and $5 coupon, or $0.89/serving w/o S&S/AM/coupon, that's about 3-5x the cost of a serving of fresh milk (assuming $5/gal), without any clear benefits aside from convenience. While it does contain DHA, we don't know how much, and even if we did, there's no fixed recommendation, so I worry this is just marketing hype and not real value.Since it's ultra-pasteurized, not sure about the quality of the milk itself. I'm not a raw milk fanatic, but ultra-pasteurized (super high temp, short pasteurization vs. just plain old pasteurized, low-temp) does destroy the milk proteins (which you know if you've ever tried to make cheese from ultra-pasteurized milk). I have to admit this is one of those completely subjective biases, but I dislike the idea of over-processing any food that is cheap and plentiful in a more natural state. All in all, it's palatable and at least as good a choice as other ultra-pasteurized single-serving milk products, certainly better than sugary chocolate milk, but I can't recommend it for everyday home use when a fresh alternative is so cheap and readily available.I'm including whole milk (recommended milk for toddlers unless they have specific medical problems that suggest lowfat milk), 2% milk and this drink for easy comparison. I got milk values from self nutritional data. (I used 6.84 oz as the serving size because the tub says it makes 130 fl oz, and there are 19 servings per can--130/19=6.84 oz. So the milk values are for the same volume, rather than the standard 1 cup you usually see cited.per 6.84 fluid oz (milk as-is, formula as mixed)Whole milk--3.25% fat (note: the stuff in my fridge is actually 4% and has a few extra grams of fat; other values the same)116 cal - 7g fat - 4g sat fat - 20mg cholesterol - 84mg sodium - 298mg potassium - 11g carb - 11g sugar - 7g protein2% milk104 cal - 4g fat - 2.5g sat fat - 17mg cholesterol - 86mg sodium - 313mg potassium - 10g carb - 10g sugar - 7g proteinEnfagrow Next Powder, Vanilla Flavor, 1/3 cup + 6oz water160 cal - 6g fat - 3g sat fat - <5mg cholesterol - 80mg sodium - 270 mg potassium - 21g carb - 13g sugar - 6g protein

Doesn't taste especially good
I often have toddlers at my home and so I thought this might be a welcome change from juice boxes and chocolate milk. This is the powdered, vanilla version of Enfagrow that is designed for older toddlers ages 1-3 years. The directions say to mix with water for a vanilla flavored, milk based drink that is vitamin fortified and contains DHA. It does mix easily and completely in water however, the two toddlers I offered this to rejected it after one taste. Then I tasted it and I didn't care for the taste, either. This is interesting to me since the ready-to-drink version is very tasty my granddaughter especially loves it. http://www.amazon.com/Enfagrow-Ready-Drink-Vanilla-Flavor/dp/B00ETK4U62/ref=cm_cr-mr-title It just tastes like vanilla milk to me, where as the powdered version has a strange, baby formula taste to me.I will try incorporating the rest of the cans into some of the other foods I make for my little visitors, but I won't be buying it again. However, I've already purchased more of the ready-to-drink Enfagrow. My advice is to buy the smallest quantity of each version and see how your child likes it before buying larger amounts.

A great way to get good nutrition for toddlers who don't eat that well!
My grandson isn't the best eater and every mealtime is spent trying to coax him into eating. He isn't necessarily picky, he is just never hungry. The one thing he does love is milk -- and he will willingly drink 2-3 glasses of milk at dinner instead of eating actual food. While it is by no means a great idea to replace food with liquid for a toddler, and I am not advocating this in any way to be a substitute to an actual well-balanced diet, sometimes a parent/grandparent needs a few tricks up their sleeve to sneak in nutrition when possibl!I started mixing the Enfagrow Toddler Next Step Vanilla in with my grandson's milk at mealtimes and he drinks that in addition to whatever food I can get him to eat. He likes the taste, it mixes well, and I do not think it fills him up any faster which would prevent him from eating. I think this a great way to get him an extra boost of those important vitamins and minerals.Definitely recommend this for parents/grandparents of picky eaters or kids who don't eat much to help achieve a nutritious diet for optimum growth and development.
