Good filter ... excelent value compared to name brands
I'm a retired builder, standard forced air system .... I know all about having a balanced duct/system ... I never use the higher value allergen type filters because they restrict air flow, furnaces are not designed to be true air filters, only to keep the system reasonably clean .... too much restriction reduces furnace efficiency and stresses blower fan motor .... I have a large hairy Bouvier dog, so beyond normal maintenance, I change my filters often, about every 30-40 days in the heating season ... this keeps the filter fairly clean with little restriction .... with that schedule I like to keep the costs down ... these filters seem as good as the prior filters I was using as well as being $10 cheaper per 6 pack ... because of the dog shedding I use light pre-filters on my floor return vents, changing them out as needed ... my rule is filters are a lot cheaper than replacing a furnace motor ... which runs in the hundreds plus labor/diagnostics

Better than Filtrete, at over 50% off! Read more to find out why else to buy these over Filtrete!
A cost savings of over 50% isn't worth much if the filter is garbage right? Well you are in luck with the Aerostar brand of filters! With all the enthusiasm I've written into this review, it may sound like it was written by an Aerostar marketing executive, but I assure you, I'm just a truck driver who is trying to save money on his home air filters. I like clean air so I strictly change them every 90 days, and those dollars can add up when you're over-paying for a household consumable item. The Aerostar MERV 11 filter is the same rating as the Filtrete 1000 (red), for apples to apples comparison. I received the filters today in a box that was made for a 6-pack of filters, which is good for shipping purposes, as there isn't any dead space to collapse under weight of other boxes. With that in mind, let your blade protrude only about the thickness of the cardboard so you don't cut into the filters when opening the box. The filters that came in the box are exactly what you see in the photo, with disregard to the Aerostar logo, naturally. They are plain white, with wire mesh lattice on the filter media and white "X" paper lattice for reinforcement on the exhaust side. Where they are superior to the Filtrete filters, is that the white "X" paper lattice is found on both the intake and exhaust sides, where as the Filtrete only has it on the exhaust side. This difference makes the Aerostar filter much more rigid, which is what you want in a filter in order to stand up to and not buckle under the air pressure of your blower unit. It is also worth noting that the white "X" paper lattice is glued to every filter pleat it comes in contact with, adding to the strength of the filter. Full disclosure, they are about 1/4" smaller, on length and width, than the Filtrete filters. This isn't a big deal for my unit because, first, even the Filtrete filters leave a gap, and second, there's always some blow-by in every unit. No filter fits perfectly and air-tight without duct tape. And who is going to go through that trouble four times a year? Next year, I may give the AIRx Allergy brand a try.
