This Michoacán style girl dress (blouse and skirt) is made by women in communities near Mexico city. Michoacán is the state of Mexico where Purepechas have lived for a long time, in the land around Lake Patzcuaro. Women use sophisticated clothing: A skirt with a pattern, a long blouse with embroidery at the bottom and around the neck, a belt strapped on the back, and usually a rebozo. Blouses with more embroidery are used in special celebrations. Aprons are also typically used and they also have nice cross stitch embroidery decoration. This dress is used everywhere in Mexico for celebrations and festivities, such as 5 de mayo, independence day, Day of the death, parades or a school performance. The blouse is made of poplin with handmade embroidery, and the skirt in broadcloth with elastic on waist. The flounce design makes this combination super cute! We are working with co-ops of women that work together to make pieces of art using their available time at home to embroider and woven. We support the indigenous families of Mexico empowering them to earn a stable income and providing a window to the world for their products with a fair trade price.
