Very Minimalistic FM Radio In A Cubist Design
ByronStatics Portable Radio FM, Vintage Retro Radios, Best Reception and Longest Lasting, Ear Phone Jack and Aux-In, Main Powered and Battery Backup, for Indoor Outdoor Use To clarify, this review is for the KPR-310 model. This is a bit of a strange beast. The other radios in this range from ByronStatics all have a very 1950's America retro styling to them. However the KPR-310 scraps all of that styling and goes for something a lot more Cubist and very minimalistic. It's actually very difficult to know exactly what style they were aiming for but it's ended up very brick-like overall. But for the sake of this review I'll stick with minimalist as it only has 2 operational dials and no other mod cons or anything to bring it to the modern age. I would say though that this radio is very plasticky and does feel a bit on the cheap side. The two dials feature a combined On/Off/Volume dial, a large tuning dial and that's really it for functions. The tuning dial offers FM ranges between 87.5 and 108Hz. The dial operates smoothly overall but does have a slight grinding feeling in the early stages of rotation. Reception quality and stations received will vary greatly on location, but the large telescopic aerial on the back of the radio is there to help get the best out of any stations you receive. For me I got decent reception on the main stations I prefer so all was good in that respect. This radio has a large single front facing speaker that offers an ok sound experience for something in this price point. It won't blow you away but sounds good enough for what it is. There is a 3.5mm headphone input so your music will sound better through those if you have a decent head set. Also included is an AUX input so you can play other wired devices through this radio if you so desire. Given the speaker is just on the OK side I do feel this is a bit of an unnecessary addition. The radio is powered via the included mains lead and plug but will also operate using 4 AA batteries, which are not included. Batteries do add to the portability of this radio somewhat but it's shape and design isn't what I'd choose if looking for a portable radio as there's no carry handle even. As an FM radio it works fine but it is a strange looker.. quite cheap feeling, very chunky and angular with minimal controls. So if it's a basic radio you need then this is that. I must admit the design and style isn't really to my taste and I much prefer the true retro styled sets they do. But I'm sure others will like it so my own personal opinion doesn't detract from the fact this is an ok radio on the operational and sound level. Nothing flash, no gimmicks, no modern additions, just a simple and easy to use FM radio.
