The Avenues (Images of America)

Not a 'book of beautiful homes.'
As someone who is an 'avid walker' of the Avenues, I was expecting a book which showcased some of the more prominent and architecturally original homes. Instead what this book is, is more of a 'history' of the Avenues featuring people and 'general history' as well as homes. The problem to me is that the homes 'featured' in the book are 'generally speaking,' pretty average homes 'architecturally speaking.' There are very beautiful homes including southern colonial style, pioneer, queen anne and even a really 'cool' art deco style home in the avenues but not featured in this book. There are many beautiful 'two story' homes in the avenues and yet the main focus of this book is on homes that have a more 'sterile' bungalow look to them. A lot of homes they show are actually quite 'tacky' from an architectural standpoint. The McMullen building is one of the better buildings that wasn't included, for instance. But there are many more 'omitted.' Obviously not all homes can be included but there are some wonderful 'historic' homes in the Avenues that should have been at the top of their list in my opinion. Some color photos would also have been nice.

Interesting Historic Photos
Very interesting for those of us who live in or near The Avenues. Wish the book had an index in the back, however.
