.com Raul Malo's velvety tenor is warm and dirty in all the right ways. As the primary songwriter and frontman for the Mavericks and as a member of all-star band Los Super Seven, Malo's soulful croon has bent round the blue notes of country and spread itself thickly yet pliantly between and on top of the polyrhythms of Latin roots music. A tremendous and far-reaching effort, Today (Malo's solo debut) showcases not only what a genre-blending writer and powerful singer he is, but makes clear just how connected Malo is in his delivery and phrasing, both in Spanish and in English. There's something behind and under every syllable the man utters, from the excitable title cut to "It Takes Two to Tango," a frisky duet with pal and vocal powerhouse in her own right Shelby Lynne. Today, a full-on exploration of roots and rhythm, rocks righteously and rolls with balanced restraint and abandon. --Paige La Grone

Great album as expected
This album has a nice upbeat feel, several of the songs are song in Spanish. Raul sings with very good enuciation (especially when singing in Spanish). I only speak very limited conversational Spanish, and after listening to this album I want to learn to speak the language more fluently.

Raul rhythms in my living room
I hate to admit it, but I had never heard of Raul Malo or the Mavericks until one morning when I drove within the reach of a favorite Philly radio station. After hearing "Every Little Thing About You," I ordered the CD.The first track, "Today" blasts out of the speakers and fills my home with energetic optimism. I am sure my neighbors have seen me spinning, whirling my way past the windows. "Every Little Thing About You" gets the fingers snapping in unison with a dramatic tango in the living room. "I Said I Love You" brings a smile to my face. Spanish tracks generate an intense desire to root around for that high school Spanish dictionary although the songs are courteously transcribed for the purchaser.I have to agree with other reviewers that there is a vague Roy Orbison similarity when one compares the tones of their voices. However, Malo demonstrates an honesty sans the syrupy quality that makes one believe that he truly feels what he sings. After hearing his CD, I found his website and signed up for an e-mail alert for his concert list. I bet if you listen to this fabulous CD, you will, too.

What a great voice!
His first solo effort, sans The Mavericks, is a great debut! His rich, strong tenor carries these songs well. The title track 'Today' is a lively upbeat number about being in love. 'I Said I Love You, and 'It Takes Two To Tango' are great showcases of his voice. It is nice to see him branching out from the Maverics. Some more solo efforts can be seen with 'Los Super Seven'. Definitely mexican cantina music on those discs... but just as enjoyable. With a voice like his, I would love to hear him do some standards, probably best suited to rock standards, but I imagine he would do as well with others too.He proves his malleability here with trying a little rock, spanish/mexican, tex-mex and pop with latin flavor and carries it off well. I do hope we hear more from him.

Wonderfully original and sexy ...
I am a fan of a great diversity of music. Being a latina, I lean towards music that my roots call to my inner desire to always keep in touch with my roots. I came across Raul's music through Pandora and to my surprise I realized that he was the other vocalist on one of my favorite duets that is performed by the great Cuban artist, Eliades Ochoa, "No Me Preguntes Tanto".His songs are wonderful and I appreciate that he sings in Spanish as well as English. Insightful, earthy, and moving love songs. Just a pleasure all around. He is a gem :-)

A Favorite Among Favorites
I had never heard Raul until I stumbled across his Christmas CD,Β MALO,RAUL - MARSHMALLOW WORLD & OTHER HOLIDAY FAVORITES , which I love. I am not crazy about his recordings with the Mavericks (country music is pretty sparce in my collection), but I am TOTALLY CRAZY ABOUT THIS RECORDING! The Latin rhythms are sensual and extremely danceable, and there are moments when Raul's voice can only be described as "deliciously dirty." (No, we're not talking explicit lyrics.) Dim the lights and coax your sweetheart off the couch; this CD is a wonderful prelude to a romantic evening.

Raul Malo
If you like good singing, you can't help but like Raul's smooth voice. He is very eclectic and can sing to almost any genre. If you can shed your prejudices about certain style os music and just appreciate the man's talent and voice you will enjoy this CD. In this CD, Raul's latino roots really come through. From ballads to snappy songs Raul is a crooner with a voice that is like eating honey.

Solo Artist
I always liked the Mavericks and, when I listened to Raul Malo's solo cds, I knew why. This cd is very up-tempo, especially the Latin-flavoured tunes.
