A true classic for amateurs and dreamers today
I love this book. It looks a little dated, but don't be deceived, it is bang on the money. I use it as a reference, as inspiration as well as just exciting ideas. Kindle couldn't replace a good old fashioned hard back next to you when you want to do something. It works, he tells you what to watch out for, what to spend on and what to think about for a little longer. I bout his and the how to live on one acre. Together they are all I need. I know it can seem expensive, but a hard back copy of this is worth every penny. It have saved my buying the wrong stuff for poultry, digging too shallow, so definitely worth the money.

The best book I own!
The best all round self sufficiency book I own! Great book with quality illustration easy to navigate to find the appropriate pages. All info is relevant and this book covers most aspects of becoming and sustaining a self sufficient lifestyle. Everything you need in one place

Fabulous book- still!
I ordered this as a gift for someone starting out with land hoping to become more self sufficient- I was astonished that she hadn't heard of john Seymour, who I knew in the 1970's and who I consider to be the self sufficiency guru. The parcel arrived impeccably and on time, and my friend is thrilled with the book as well.

A pleasant browse, but dated.
This might make a pleasant gift for someone interested in this subject, but it comes across as very dated, and most of the information it contains can be found online in far better detail. It does provide an overview of everything from how to thatch a roof to how to butcher a chicken, (without stunning it first!) but for anyone with a serious interest in self-sufficiency, a book about permaculture would be a lot more useful and inspiring.

knows his stuff and the layout of this book is perfect, just right for a Sunday afternoon read
I purchased the first issue of this book and was won over, John Seymore, knows his stuff and the layout of this book is perfect, just right for a Sunday afternoon read, or a serious hands on small holder. The latest version of the book has extra content, detailing mainly growing food, the stuff we all need, so well worth having in my eyes. The Book would also make a fine gift to anyone who has an allotment, really use full ideas and tips.
