Wonderful daily devotional
Just started reading The Gospel from Patmos and look forward to reading each day's devotional. I've been a fan of Jon Pauline for a long time and would recommend anything that is written by him.

Not a Commentary
Nowhere in the description of this book does it inform you that this author is a Seventh-Day Adventist. This shows up in the promotion of their view of the Sabbath in the reference to the Lord's Day in 1:10 and 14:7, and in an advertisement for an Ellen White book in the back. He also advocates their doctrines of the annihilation of the wicked and the investigative judgment. In spite of its appearance, this is not a commentary on the Revelation. Rather, it is a devotional based on that book. It has brief portions - as one would expect with 22 chapters spread over a year - with a page-long devotional, and ending with a brief prayer. Each reading only takes about five minutes, as they aren't very deep. He takes an Idealist approach, such as an aspect of Christ revealed in each of the epistles to the seven churches. He discusses their geography and history, but as object lessons, not the main points of the respective epistles. His approach to the thousand years of chapter 20 is historic premillenial. His description of amillenialism is poor. He says that, if the millenium began with the first coming, then such events as those described in chapters 13-17 must have occurred before the fist advent, which is obviously impossible. However, that is only if one assumes that all of the events in Revelation are described in chronological order, which an ammilenialist would not assume. The book has an annoying number of grammatical errors. It's bad enough that the writer can't do better, but didn't the publisher have any copy-editors?

As a scholar, Dr.Jon Paulien brings the original Greek text in a powerful way, in order to make it relevant for today's readers. As a writer, his style of breaking the text in small bites, one per day, makes the lecture even more atractive. Reading the book either at once or as a daily devotional, is a positive experience.
