The Last Train from Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back Audio CD – Audiobook, CD, Unabridged

Purchased this by mistake looking for the book. The accounts are rather long and drawn-out and if it weren't so horrific, would put you to sleep from the fact that it never seems to end (maybe the result of shock)! I cannot imagine what we were thinking when we let scientists design such a weapon. Everyone aught to read this book or listen to it - but be warned, you could get PTSD!!

An Excellent Read! Extremely detailed analysis of the known pysics, biological and psycological effects apon two cities and the very personal heart breaking experiences of a wonderful people.

My son heard the author on a latea night radio station and picked up the book and wanted the cd to go with the book. He found the book very Interesting.

I read the Holt "description" of Last Train From Hiroshima for Amazon as really nothing more than an attempt by Holt to save its own butt and excuse its unpardonable cowardice in the face of being intimidated by a bunch of military yahoos who want to prevent any version of history which doesn't flatter their own opinions. Holt could have tracked down the sources of the lies, ad hominem attacks and other pressures brought on them by these self-appointed censors and would have found that every one of them was either a trivial exaggeration of some secondary matter or, in other cases, downright lies and planned character assassinations being stage-managed by a small group of misguided detractors. The detractors are of the same mindset and affiliations as were the self-appointed censors who forced Martin Harwitt, Director of the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum, to resign rather than revise history the way a few members of the Air Force preferred to have it told (they demanded he exclude pictures of the Japanese and the effects of the bombing of Hiroshima from an exhibit). That is not much different than what was done to Pellegrino and his attempt to give us an accurate picture of things from ground zero. That is what his detractors really want to silence. Intimidating the publishers into complying with censorship efforts is but one of the ways they have attempted to silence Dr. Pellegrino. There is no controversy about the book. The real controversy is in the way a few disgruntled individuals have elected to keep its content from being seen and weighed by the public.Yes, there were a couple of errors found (one a sourcing error, which didn't disprove the point; just questioned the source). Indeed, the few passages that relied on the one questionable and unconfirmed account of a few military asides, might have been left out, or retracted in subsequent editions, as is normal with any book of substantial value in its remaining text and dominant thesis. Removing the entire work from public view is not an appropriate response to such problems. Pellegrino readily admitted his mistake and made a retraction. In any case, that point of contention was not the main point of the book, which is overwhelming devoted to a close, scientific and historical account of what the bombing looked like and did to those on the receiving end of an atom bomb. It is an insult to our culture that the book is not currently available to everyone, but instead has been "burned" to appease the appetites of a very few (non-historians) to have their way and leave the us in silence. There isn't a person in this country who isn't the poorer (and more ignorant of important information) by the Holt & Company decision or by the reluctance of other publishers to pick it up and put it back on our library shelves where it belongs.

I just finished listening to The Last Train From Hiroshima. As I got into this book, I discovered that there is some controversy surrounding the author and one of the people represented in the story. Already into the book, I kept on listening. I hope that the discrepancies can be worked out. It would be a shame to miss this important story because of the nit-picking of political correctness.I have taken several very sobering trips in my life. One to Dachau. One to Pearl Harbor. One to Hiroshima. Much has been written about World War II. Much has been written about the Holocaust. But, in my estimation, not so much about Hiroshima and Nagasaki and their survivors, the Hibakusha. As a child, in the 1950's, I saw pictures of these outcast people, their strangely scarred faces and bodies mutely telling the story of the misfortune of their location near the hypocenters of the atomic bomb detonations.Pellegrino, in this book, has graphically brought forward the unfolding of the horror born of the two atomic bombs. A horror that persisted for many years, in many ways. Only now, as the longest-lived survivors of these disasters are all passing away, does the risk of forgetting loom large. Not only do we need a way to remember the horrors, but we need to remember the wisdom of the Hibakusha people. They would want us to remember. Just as the survivors of the Holocaust hope we will remember. So that this will never happen again. Pellegrino has brought forward these messages of love. We need to hear them.Let us not get lost in the world of political correctness, and miss the incredible message in this book.

This was a great read/listen. It had just enough of the science stuff to off set the horrible personal stories. Gave insight into this tragedy for those not around when it happened.
