A brand new restoration from a 4K scanThe year is 1997 and in a police state future the island of Manhattan has been turned into a maximum security prison. The rules are simple: once you’re in, you don’t come out. But when the President of the United States (Donald Pleasence) crash lands an escape pod into the centre of the city after fleeing a hijacked plane, a ruthless prison warden (Lee Van Cleef) bribes ex-soldier and criminal Snake Plisskin into entering the hazardous Manhattan and rescuing the distraught president from the twisted world of New York and from the demented clutches of its new ruler The Duke (Isaac Hayes) in John Carpenter’s cyber-punk, action, suspense spectacular.Extras:Purgatory: Entering John Carpenter’s ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK: A brand new retrospective documentary produced by Ballyhoo Motion Pictures and featuring interviews with writer Nick Castle, cinematographer Dean Cundey, composer Alan Howarth, production designer Joe Alves, special visual effects artist/model maker Gene Rizzardi, production assistant David De Coteau, photographer Kim Gottleib-Walker, Carpenter biographer John Muir, visual effects historian Justin Humphreys, and music historian Daniel Schweiger. Well, I love the film so much I bought the disc twice, for one thing lol. My original disc had inexplicably cracked in the centre, of all places. No idea what happened as I'm usually so careful to handle CD's and DVD's like they were new-borns. Anyway, I bought it again. For people considering buying this, I highly recommend doing so. If you're taking a chance on this movie and happen not to have seen it, desertcart do have great sellers for second hand copies. I got mine from a company beginning with a 'Z'. I don't wanna sound like I'm advertising for them. But bottom line is they were recommended to me by a friend, and I know how infuriating it can be buying second hand discs. Sooo many people simply don't handle discs correctly or with care, and soooo many second hand sellers sell these discs. Go with the company I recommended, and you'll get a perfect disc every time. I originally bought this film new. But when I needed a replacement and saw that company had a second hand one on sale here, I thought, "Great!". Not that I don't think this movie is worth buying new twice, but I don't literally cough up money like Donald Trump you know! ;oP Now, onto the disc...There aren't so many extras as say The Thing dvd has. But what is here is good. There's a featurette, a delete scene (which was going to be the original opening scene), and a couple of trailers. There's also not one, but two commentaries. Firstly a John Carpenter/Kurt Russell commentary, and secondly a commentary by Producer Debra Hill and Production Designer Joe Alves, for those of you who interested in that side of things. For those wondering, the picture quality of the feature on this dvd is good. The film itself, if you haven't seen it, is based in a future where the crime rate has quadrupled. Our main character, Snake Plissken, is the guy everybody in our world would like to be lol. And Russell turns in a great performance as our anti-hero, who must rescue the US President (Donald Pleasence turning in a typically brilliant performance) from the prison that New York has become. Oh, and he's only got 24 hours to do this or he's going to die. There are plenty of great performances in this film. And it has a typically brilliant John Carpenter ending, which firstly makes you think "Cool". Maybe, after a couple viewings of this you'll think "A #1". It's not the dumbed-down action film Hollywood seems to want us to get used to in this 21st Century, where we seem to actively be conditioned and encouraged not to think. And it isn't your typical 21st Century Hollywood Nolan-esque (sorry Chris but this is true) film where Hollywood's Marketing Teams are telling you that you're smart if you "get" it. In my humble opinion, those who buy into marketing strategies like that just go to show that they aren't as smart as they think. Anyyyyway...This is simply a cool film, and it doesn't try to convince you you're cool for watching it, nor try to convice you that you're smart. This is Snaaaake Plissken, man. He doesn't care WHAT you think. And he sure as heck won't be told he's smart if he gets something, or that he's "Thinking too much." Not unless you'd like to chew on a knuckle sandwich. ;oD Infact, you know what? This film doesn't do anything to patronize you at all. It just winks at you, and says, "Come along on this ride." Refreshing during these patronizing times we're living in. Who knew film marketing was once that way? ;oP Vive Escape! Vive Snake! Vive la Revolution! Review: Great film - A great classic, at a great price, brought back a lot of memories watching this again, a must watch.

Excellent Movie
My first time watching this at the suggestion of my friend, so I wanted the best way to experience it. I rocked up to his house and it turned out he couldn't play 4k, oops! Luckily, this has both. Excellent movie, a lot of fun.

Good transfer to 4K, original is old, missed opportunities though
Watching it in HDR is a must - so much I hadn't seen - at least clearly - before. Most of it was night shoots - apparently they did not shoot day for night, it was just interesting Cinematography. Surprisingly this does not date; that's the beauty of alt history fiction. It IS as funny as I remember, not a comedy obviously, but typical John Carpenter telling a tale using parody, pastiche, slapstick almost - the message is clear, the medium typical of the time. The ONLY surprise casting was Isaac Hayes - he makes a remarkably good villain / victim of circumstances, cannot imagine anyone else as "The Duke Of New York, A Number 1"; talented musician, surprisingly talented actor; perfect laconic match for Kurt Russell. The Bank Robbery sequence looks ghastly in 4K - surely they could have restored it properly. Better still, restored and recreated an entire run though including amending the opening blurb and voiceover. Much as I love this movie and have since it was released - yes I AM that old - I prefer the sequel Escape From LA - broad comedy as opposed to the more restrained humour in this and sends itself and this movie up perfectly. Frankly too many missed opportunities in restoring this and I would have preferred to see a Special Edition with BOTH movies together - one informs the other. SO glad I didn't spend £40+ on the box set.

"..CULT 80'S CLASSIC.."
John carpenter has directed so many cult classic horrors and Sci-Fi's over the years and Escape from new York is certainly one of them, a very memorable sci-fi with an awesome cast, a great visual style and a cool story, Kurt Russell is the notorious Snake Plisskin and ex special forces soldier turned criminal who is sent into New York which is now a massive maximum security prison, any one who goes in never comes out, the presidents plane air force one crashes into the middle of the prison island and Snake is recruited with the promise of a full pardon to save the president within 24 hours, the effects in the movie look great for the early 80's, a very cool visual style of a torn up new York city, the rest of the cast is great too, many famous faces from the past including Donald Pleasance as the president, Lee Van Cleef, Isaac Hayes, and Tom Atkins, many of whom are no longer with us, this is a must have in your collection if your a big 80's fan of cult classic sci-fi, always worth going back too! Blu-ray picture looks good in HD, 1080p Special features include a making of documentary, trailers, interview, deleted scene, commentary. Region Free ABC, 99-mins, 1981.

So, at first this movie made me feel old. I love John Carpenter and had seen most of his films (including the sequel to this and my step-father simply told me the plot of this film while we watched that,) but I had not yet seen this all the way through. So, here's the plot, around a year before I'm born (I'm 40) crime is getting really out of hand in America. By the time I'm in Kindergarten (the future when this was made,) crime is out of control and they turn New York into a giant, walled off prison unit for the whole country. This film's narrative opens in the far future (my freshman year of high school) where Kurt Russell is the only person that can save the president of the United States (Dr. Loomis from the original Halloween pictures,) from the Prison of New York City and also deliver to him a valuable recording that could end an ongoing war for the United States. As always, Carpenter and Hill had incredible attention to detail adding stuff you'll never forget like the voice speaker during the opening scene telling criminals they can simply elect to be immediately murdered and cremated and their cremains will be transferred to family and etc...4k Blu-ray is really a format where little things like this stand out in a home theater setting and you catch everything that John snuck in there. This is my third John Carpenter 4k disc (I also own The Thing and They Live) and I cherish it like I do the Blue Underground Italian discs. I met him one time at a convention, and it was a good time. He kept teasing Nick Castle trying to get a rise out of him. He definitely commanded a presence like he could run the show effectively FOR SURE. That must be why he's so successful. That impressed me and I always remembered it. It was nothing he said specifically but just him in general, he set the tone subtly with his presence and you know this guy runs the show, lol. I'm the boss at work, so I respect things like that. It was the first time I got to meet a hero and they were exactly what I hoped they'd be in my wildest dreams. Great movie, great film maker, buy this damn thing and watch it already! Watch Kurt Russel kick ass and know that I'm sitting in a dimly lit room experiencing sex ed during this same time period! 1997 forever! Carpenter forever! Russell forever! Pleasance forever! Also, the dude that played the angel Gabriel in Disney's One Magic Christmas is in this movie. You're welcome. If you watch it every year, you'd be trying to figure out like hell who that guy is. I know I was until I remembered during the second act!

Un chef-d'œuvre très respectable ! Révolutionnaire dans son concept, ses idées, sa cinématographie à son époque. John Carpenter est décidemment un très grand cinéaste de la débrouille.
