works great
I have had one of these de-icing cables on the front of my house for a few years and it worked great so I decided to add a few more around the house. I have never had a problem with ice dams but this seems like a pretty cheap precaution especially up here in NH.They provide you with plenty of clips to attached to the shingles and the process is very easy and is a DIY project if you don't mind being on a ladder. It only took me about 30 min. to install the cable.Just make sure you buy the correct length cable, the way to figure that is through some pre-planning. Take a look at the area you are planning to install the cable and take some measurements. You should have approx 2 foot loops about 16" apart, so if you have a 30 length of roof you want to cover your already at 60 ft., you also need to figure in extra cable for a double run in the gutter (if you have one) so if you add the 30 ft. gutter x 2 that's another 60 ft.Then add the downspout, let's just say that another 15 ft. x 2 (need a double run for best results) that's another 30ft. So in total you would need a 150 ft. cable for a 30ft. length of roof with a gutter and a downspout.

2 for 5 -- Buy Lots of Extras -- You Will Need Them
I would have rated this a "0" or negative number but the site would only allow a "1". After replacing the roof I purchased some longer cables for the larger roof areas and needed two of these shorter length cables to finish two respective valleys in preparation for the 2012-13 winter. The install was completed in the fall of 2012 prior to snowfall.Ice began to build over the winter and when it came time to energize these cables all that happened was circuit breakers would trip. After trouble shooting all the cables with a VOM meter it was discovered that both of the 30' ones were shorting through the cables. Swell.I contacted Amazon and explained the problem and was told that both were outside their return window. The customer service rep. seemed to understand that you put these things on the roof before snowfall, such as during the summer or fall, and wait to use them when needed, but who knows when that will be? Anyway, they decided to replace one of the two bad cables as goodwill. It showed up and was DOA right out of the box. So, at this point I have three of these cables and none work.I decided to contact the manufacturer, Easy Heat, which is really Emerson Electric, explained that I was 0 for three on these cables so what was the problem? Of course they said they never heard of this happening before but would be happy to diagnose them and replace them if I paid shipping, dug up all the original receipts, and they had to be sent to them in their original boxes. Yea, right, I keep all junk boxes piling up somewhere waiting for defects. No thanks. Aren't you people a little more interested in the liability of defective shorting electric cables? Rant: supposedly there is a two year warranty on these but Easy Heat's (Emerson Electric) customer service is utterly dismal at best with a dose of attitude. Good luck on the warranty thing.Still needing the two 30' runs I decided to purchase one each from different suppliers hoping I could improve the the odds of getting two that would actually work. Success. The two new ones arrived, were pre-tested with a VOM meter and both worked. So I am now 2 for 5.Stay away from Easy Heat (Emerson Electric) products as they appear to have minimal interest in their defective heating cables, at least that was my experience.

Very glad I bought this
This product does as it states. It's versatile and can be formed to fit any roof line pitch and comes w hardware to do so. I'd recommend purchasing another hardware kit (@ $7) just in case. I got my 3, 30' cables up just prior to @ a 6" snowfall and it definitely kept the gutters from freezing up. The trick is to turn them on as snow begins to fall, not after. The cables will take longer to work if the snow has already fallen. Purchase double the length of the gutter line you intend to defreeze, if not triple the length to run back down inside the gutter then drape down inside the downspout. Make sure you have a few dedicated outlets for these too, just one of my 30' cables draws 300 watts, so if you need longer, a few of these can overload a circuit in no time.

Seems to work ok
Seems to work ok, only warms up enough to melt around the wire. - witch it's meant to do.

Effective and Power-Hungry
We have had two of these on our house, for several years. They have completely eliminated the ice dams and clogged downspouts that used to trouble us. It has been exceptionally snowy, and cold this winter, and the cables have still done the job. One thing to keep in mind is the power consumption. At 5 watts per foot, 50 feet of cable uses 6 kWh per day, or 180 kWh per month. At 20 cents per kWh, that costs $36 per month. To reduce that cost, I've started unplugging the cables when the roof was clear of snow. The reviews on the optional automatic control have been mixed, but I may give that a try, next season.

Works decently
We ran this through our gutter because our gutter always freezes and then ice covers our porch. This does provide one or two lines of water instead of solid ice, but it did not fix the problem. It helps a bunch compared to how it used to be, but it doesn't warm enough to melt much ice (or in our case, it doesn't keep a whole lot of water from freezing).

Four Stars
I put it in my gutters works well reading how a lot of people are popping gfi .If you are using an extension cord that could be why.I had another that use to do that but if it was hard lined it was fine . So I put in outlets wherever I plug in haven't had any problems in 3 years.

Warmed my winter boots
Bought them to warm my snow boots. They are easy to insert into boot, with nice long electrical wire, but really would have liked them to get a little hotter. I had no fear that my boots would burst into flames! I also bought them to dry out my gardening boots next spring, and I think they will do a good job.
