Turok (Xbox 360)

Much better than I expected
Being a big fan of the original two Turok games for N64, I originally had high hopes for this. The developers had said that they understood what made the original games unique, and that they planned on staying true to the roots of the series. Of course, after I saw the initial reviews and watched some videos of the game in action, I was a little let down, and for whatever reason, ultimately ended up not purchasing the game.Fast forward over two years later, I saw the game selling for very cheap. It was an impulse purchase, but one I don't regret in the slightest.Turok for Xbox 360 is very atmospheric, and in fact, does do a good job of staying true to the Turok name. The variety of locations ensures that you'll never have to get bored of looking at the same area over and over. From dark and cramped caves, to bright green jungles, to a run-down enemy complex. While these sound like somewhat generic locales, the attention to detail really makes them feel real.Enemy AI is for the most part very good. They'll flank you and team up together, ensuring a decent challenge. Dinosaur AI can be a bit hit or miss, but the main goal of this enemy type is mostly just to overwhelm you in close quarters.Unique gameplay mechanics include stealth kills with your bow and knife, and baiting dinos to attack enemy soldiers. Neither works perfectly, but you can still use these gameplay elements to your advantage. There's nothing more satisfying than taking out an entire room of guards silently with your bow.The exploration element of past games is not as prevalent, as the levels are fairly straightforward, however there is still plenty of room for improvisation within each area. It's obvious that the developers wanted to provide as many opportunities as possible for players to approach a situation. The cutscenes and story, while not amazing, got the job done, and were of high-quality.The only negative aspect would have to be the variety in weapons. Past games in the series had some of the craziest contraptions ever for players to use in the destruction of opponents....of course the infamous cerebral bore from Turok 2 is the first one to come to mind. Other than the bow and surprisingly effective knife, I mostly used the same basic plasma rifle throughout 80% of the campaign. None of the weapons stand out....just the usual sniper rifle, sub-machine gun, pistol, etc.I had a blast with this game, as there is never a dull moment. It is a short action packed adventure, full of explosive set-pieces that are sure to impress. Four stars.

Nothing like the Original
I loved the old Turok for N64. There were three specific aspects of the game that I loved.1) Ridiculously huge nasty gun selection consisting of fun items like the razor wind, the shredder, and my personal favorite, the cerebral bore. All of which fit nicely in your magical medicine bag2) Dump trucks of blood and gore. I loved being able to decapitate, eviscerate and amputate my way through enemies.3) The thoroughly awesome science fiction aspects of the story. You are Turok ;the last in a long line of mystically destined Native American hunters, cast into an alternate dimension where you must battle cybernetically modified, turbo, dinosaur mutant, alien, monsters being controlled by ancient Lovecraftian aliens and mutant god things. It just can't get better than that! The new Turok has none of this. You are a space marine named Turok. The game is basically a lame rip off of Gears of War. You have mostly two types of enemies: enemy patrol guys that don't even bleed, and dinosaurs which you mostly kill by jabbing them in the head with your combat knife. The dino kills with the knife are incredibly repetitive and only require one button push. It usually isnt even worth it to shoot them because they run around so fast. You can only carry 5 weapons at a time and two are a bow and knife. I am so sick of this forced realism in games. I want to be able to switch between flame throwers, missile launchers, shotguns etc. The massive weapon selection was one of the best aspects of the game.To sum it up1) Smaller, less imaginative weapon selection; of which you can only carry a few at a time2) Greatly reduced blood and gore.3) Almost complete removal of the original sci-fi storyline. You are a space marine; you crash on a planet with dinosaurs. That is pretty much the extent of the science fiction in this game.I got this game used for $6 and it is barely worth

EXCELLENT & FRANTIC FIRST PERSON SHOOTER
Im playing Turok on Xbox 360 for the second time now on the Hard setting and ITS A BLAST. The weapons are BIG and MASSIVE with alot of POWER,including 2 handed weapons. The game gets so frantic that you'll have to use all your weapons and ammo to full extent including their secondary attacks. The weapons include dual shotguns(using 2 shotguns at same time,1 in each hand),dual automatic rifle, war horse mini-gun,explosive arrows(which is the secondary attack of the bow and arrow),pulse rifle with grenade launcher as secondary attack, rocket launcher, bomb gun, flame thrower with a high powered napalm grenade as a secondary attack, sniper rifle, etc. Also if your fast enough you can do easy and quick 1 stab kills on dinosaurs with a combat knife in which at that moment your able to see your charactor actually do that action in 3rd person view for a short moment then it returns to first person. And the intricate details of the jungle environments, indoor environments, dinosaurs, enemy soldiers, etc, are absolutley breath taking. What a great videogame it is.
