JIM DUNLOP HE113P Flat Thumbpicks, Heavy, 3/Player's Pack

I started using these picks when I first started playing bass guitar over 10 years ago. I have been hooked on these ever since. The sound you can get out of a bass with these picks is amazing, very bright and crisp! The Medium thickness Herco picks are my favorite, but they ARE flexible enough that you lose a bit of volume when really trying to thrash some strings. The Extra Heavy picks are a bit uncomfortable over the top of the thumb, but are bearable. I've played many shows and recorded multiple times with the Medium, Heavy, and Extra Heavy Herco picks. I can't play a show without them anymore! I've tried other brands of thumb picks (Dunlop) but these are simply the best! These CAN and WILL break over time. I broke three Medium picks in one show, but I had been practicing and playing with them for three weeks. They're plenty durable, but will break eventually. BUY THESE PICKS, they're GREAT! PS- I've noticed people writing reviews on the other thicknesses of Herco picks saying that "They came stretched out, they don't stay on my thumb, etc." With hard enough playing NO pick will stay on your finger, and I always bend and flex the "thumb-ring" on these picks to fit my finger, if its too tight, I stretch it "flatter". If its too loose I "roll it under". I still pinch this thumb pick between my thumb and index finger because I play a very rapid downstrum-upstrum (8th notes) style bass (punk/rock/alternative) but the thumb-ring on these gives you the extra support you need for those really fast riffs.

I've been using the medium for about 3 weeks. I decided to get the three pack of the heavy and this is a great pick for thumb picking. In the video you can see I'm thumb picking and strumming fairly heavy and the pick is not shifting out of place. It works well gripped for flat picking although the medium might work a little better for strumming. I'm an old flat picker trying to get into thumb picking. Thumb picks are a personal preference thing but for less than $5 for three I recommend trying these picks. Quality and durability seams to be very good.

I bought these for my mandolin playing daughter. She holds a regular pick so tightly in her hand that it's more like she's clenching it, which causes her to sound like she's attacking the mandolin. These picks keep her hand loose since it's on her thumb only and she's not being forced to grip a regular pick so tightly. So for anyone out there who feels like they clench their picks, and therefore play heavy handed, these picks might work for you by allowing your hand to stay in a more relaxed position. My daughter has no problem picking out melodies or solos, so it works well for that also, not just rhythm.

In theory, I really like these picks. In fact, when I got them I immediately ordered another set. They are some of the least expensive picks, give the ability to flat pick and thumb pick, and don't seem to have any rough edges on them (Like some other popular and pricier brands). My real complaint is that the thumb wrap is too malleable. As I played for around an hour, my thumb warmed up the wrap and it started to expand until it started rotating around my thumb. I was able to curl it back in, dip it in cold water to reset it, and continue playing...but I want to spend my time playing, not spending 15 minutes making my thumb pick fit every hour. I've attached a video; the yellow pick is the one I used for an hour. I showed a few angles and comparisons. You can visibly see that the thumb wrap of the yellow is larger. That is AFTER I remolded it to make it tighter. Some other reviewers said they like them because they have a tendency to drop picks. I think these picks would be ideal for preventing drops.

Absolutely love these pics, I suffer from nerve damage and carpal tunnel so I often loose feeling in my hand and can't grip my pics enough to hold them in place or I drop them. This pics are a dream come true for me they stay in place and on my thumb, and honestly the feel and attack I can tell much difference in these and the name brand pics I use to use. I place bluegrass and southern gospel music and their working out very well for me, I'll be ordering more as soon as I finish this review. Hats off Herco

I have used and loved Herco heavy flat thumb picks for 20 + years. I was happy to see a 3-pack available for a very reasonable price, so I ordered three 3-packs. However, they were packaged in a way that stretched the thumb straps of two out of the three picks in each package. They were all packed with the red pick on the inside, the yellow pick wrapped around that, and the blue pick wrapped around the other two. Consequently the thumb straps of the yellow and blue picks were stretched so much that none of the yellow or blue picks are usable. See photos to judge the difference between the curve of each color pick. I’m going to let them sit out and hope they return to their original tight curve, but I don’t have much hope, because I have no idea how long they have been stretched out in the factory or in the packaging. Can I get picks that haven’t been wrapped around one another, without having to buy the $37 bag of 24 picks?
