Yes. The 3M 6001 filters are used mainly to protect against solvents, such as those in oil-based paints. Others would include paint thinner, lacquer thinner, turpentine and fuel vapors. Also absorbs bad smells. Ideal for non-urethane spray painting.

How long would these filters typically last if used for spray painting?are they rated by hours of use or longer?

According to 3M these filter cartridges have a shelf life of five years from the date of manufacturing. Once opened and put into use they should be replaced after 6 months. Furthermore, if you detect the contaminant by taste of smell you should immediately replace the filter cartridges even if you have not reached the six month limit.

is the clear retainer required with this filter?

The clear retainers are used for securing particulate pre-filters to the cartridges. Whether you need them or not is based on the environment in which you are going to be working. I would contact 3M technical support for assistance or visit their website.

I use these for spray painting, both airbrush and full size sprayers. And also for epoxy pouring and finishing. You get no odor at all, easy breathing as well. I also use the p95 material particle pre filter with these. Just be sure your mask has a proper and snug fit with a good seal to your face..
