What prep work has to be completed before the paint is applied?

Barely any. I broomed and used a damp sponge to wipe dust away. Then I let it dry before I started to use the product. I LOVED this product.

Does it work on brick that has a shiny sealed look

Our Whitewash Paint will only adhere to porous surfaces, as it is designed to soak into the pores of the brick or stone surface, with the excess being wiped away. We cannot guarantee that the product will performed as intended for non-porous surfaces.

Can they be used for a floor?

We do not recommend application to floors, as we have not tested this application and would not be able to provide a warranty on it.

Can you use this on slate stone ?

Even though this is for "brick", I dont see why you couldn't. Make sure the surface is free of debris and oils. Thr stone is naturally pourus and should be able to 'soak' up the paint. I would however not recommend it be placed on floor surfaces as it will likely come back up over time and fade from traffic. But on a fireplace and or hearth it shouldn't be a problem.
