I've been seeing so much chatter about this manga because the trailer for the anime came out recently, and with the success of Frieren and Delicious In Dungeon I guess the algorithm keeps pushing for Which Hat Atelier. As someone working on my own graphic novel, I decided to give it a try to learn from it. I will agree that the art and paneling are fantastic. I just finished reading Puella Magi Madoka Magical, and compared to that one this is far easier to follow visually, as well as better drawn. However, the dialogue and text exposition do betray Witch Hat Atelier quite noticeably. To be fair, most manga and anime have a weakness in dialogue and exposition, so maybe this is not particularly egregious, but to me it just stands out more because the art and paneling are so beautiful and so easy to follow, that it feels like the author didn't have as much faith in their art. This pertains to the first book, so I wonder if it gets better in the following volumes. Just to give an example from chapter one, the emotional tone can be betrayed by the over exposition in dialogue, and the dialogue could be replaced by correct clues that are already there in the art. Still, it's a cute story that could be even deeper with better dialogue and less text as exposition.

Absolutely beautiful art, and what promises to be an exciting story. Really enjoyed the characters and the introduction to the world. Very excited to read the next volume!

For some reason, there was a circular sticker on the spine and front cover. Why this was necessary, I do not understand. Taking it off caused me to rip the cover even though I did it as carefully as possible, probably because it had been on there for so long. Additionally, the book was very wavy until I had compressed it under my other books for a while.That said, Witch Hat Atelier is an amazing series. Reading it makes me feel like I’m a kid discovering manga for the first time all over again. It has beautiful art and an intelligent magic system. The story is kid-friendly, but it’s not dumbed down. In fact, I think it trusts young readers to understand it, and the author intends to uplift and inspire them.TL;DR: If you’re interested in Witch Hat Atelier, please give it a shot. Maybe just don’t buy it from here if you care about the condition in which it arrives.
