St Nicholas and Pete!
What a wonderful surprise to find this Dutch tradition told in such a simple and sincere manner. Here in the Catskills we still celebrate this tradition with parades and Sinterklass festivities. Just like they do in Holland. A nice respite from all the commercial gloss that passes for Christmas. The Dutch have always tried to be inclusive and this explains the melting pot we call Manhattan with our Statue of Liberty! What a wonderful country if only we remember to hold to our real traditions of generosity and hospitality. We have come a long way from very dark origins so let us strive to be better and better people. Merry Christmas to ALL and good night!

A True Revelation . . .
I'm a 73 year old man who's always believed in Santa Claus, or Saint Nick as the Dutch know him. After watching this version I am now convinced that Santa had a young partner by the name of "Pete". It made me think of how very cold and lonely his annual trek around the world must be. . . so it only makes sense that he would have a truly big-hearted friend named Pete. So I still believe in Santa Claus, although now I'll think of him with a true young partner Pete . . .

Silly movie - Only good for the very young
This movie may be good for the very very young, but generally not worth the time. Poorly written. You never understand the tradition in the Netherlands of St Nick traveling with a black companion (that speaks like he came from the streets of New York) or what his purpose is to be in the New World and all the convenient coincidences that leads to his red suit. All very silly and a little sad that someone put this out.

A Christmas Must
What a wonderful Socking stuffer! I had seen this movie on tv a few years ago and really enjoyed the down to earth way they explained about the Christmas season making it an uniquely warm and down to earth story about Santa. I have bought alot this movie and have stuck them in stockings and given them as gifts. Great to watch with your kids. If you have not seen this you will be sad that you have missed it. This was a delightful little story of "Santa" and his helper; how he visited the new world for the first time and how he became who he is today. There are lots of ways the writers of this film could have went with it but in my opinion they picked the best by staying with the true values of Christmas.

An enjoyable Christmas movie
Saw Santa and Pete on tv and loved it. The idea that Santa doesn't work alone, but has a partner who is actively part of what he does is great, as is the fact that Pete is a Moor, so has dark skin. This way of looking at Santa, the way a family Christmas story is woven into the movie, so that the fascination of a child is part of it and helps finish it, is precious. In addition to being a very heartwarming story, it brings up parts of history that we in the U.S. don't always think of: that there were people of African origin on our continent who were not slaves, but here as free people even from almost the beginning; that other countries don't necessarily have the same traditions around St. Nick that our popular culture has (such as a workshop at the north pole and elf helpers); as well as offering possible ideas for how a saint might have morphed into the Santa Claus we know of, with flying reindeer; the idea of a book of life and the beginnings of a saint in the making are there, too. For those who like these things, it's a fun movie. It's not Hume Cronyn's best acting job, but he did what he could, and others help improve it.

Wonderful Family Movie.
Hard to find, but a great story about love and tolerance. I play it every Christmas for my grandchildren.

So cheaply made it ruins what could have been an enjoyable movie.
The story of St Nicholas and how he meets his companion Pete, apparently the story comes from folklore originally from Denmark. It's a nice story but for me the tale is ruined by the cheap production [I think the blew the budget when they hired James Earl Jones] Pete is supposed to be a Moor from Spain who rescues Santa when he is imprisoned by the Spanish Inquisition, but Pete has a really thick New York accent it is just ridiculous!I think for younger members of the family it's a different take on the Christmas story, but for anybody older the cheap production is just so distracting!

Yes I have this, but still not had time to watch it !
My husband and I watched this film on TV one christmas and remembered it the following christmas but couldn't find it being shown on TV again. So we tracked down a copy to watch the following christmas, but with all the organising, and christmas shopping etc, still haven't had time to watch it. But we remember it as being an excellent film well worth watching. Just hope there are no technical problems with this copy.
