It is hard for me to believe that a soft non-abrasive rubber-like material can scrub away stuck on food ... does this really do the job?

This is a bottle brush which is intended to reach into long, narrow containers that your hand can't get into, and is not described or sold as a dish scrubber for dried-on food. The benefits of it being made from silicone are that nothing sticks to it, doesn't scratch or absorb any gunk or odors, so it's great to clean out your S'well sports bottles, hydro flasks, and baby bottles leaving them without that stinky sponge smell. It's also 12.5" long, which is very effective at cleaning tall containers like a vase or hummingbird feeder with old residue stuck on the bottom. Just swish some hot water and dish washing liquid in any container and use this brush - it will clean up perfectly.

Is the rod flexible to make it able to follow curved bottles?

Rod is not at all flexible but it is narrow. Allows going into curved area at an angle.

Will this brush fit a standard wine bottle aprox. 5/8” opening

This brush was not manufactured to fit a standard wine or beer bottle opening, and we have not made any claims that it does.

What is the minimum size bottle opening this brush will fit?

The brush head will NOT fit into a bottle opening the size of a wine, beer, kombucha or disposable water bottle. It'll easily fit vacuum and stainless steel bottles such as S'Well.
