Best AC series - loved it!
Excellent Game play. Loved the way you drive the ship and attack/conquer other ships. Blowing up castles, Shark kills, Underwater treasures & many more keeps you busy for long hours.Though I finished the main story, I still have many places to explore.Even if you have played previous Assassins series, this one is unique. Must have for PS4 owners.

The ship to ship combat isn't as dreadful as you'd expect...
I've loved the AC series so this was a no-brainer purchase and so far my favorite launch title for either console based on overall impression. AC1's unique take on investigation leading up to the assassinations is still one of the most ground breaking innovations the series had in my opinion. When they started to take a step away from that formula I was nervous, but they continually improved...up to Revelations. That game was a stalemate in the progression of the series. With AC3 being so buggy, the story was entertaining but not as gripping as Ezio and Altair's stories (although I loved the Revolutionary War setting, being an American, it was nice to see familiar places and historical events). AC4:BF announced it would take to the Caribbean in a pirate setting and I could hear a collective groan from the fans of the series fatigued by a decade of pirates thanks to Disney. Let alone my least favorite part of AC3, the naval combat, taking a much larger stage this go around...Gameplay - ...I was concerned for no reason. The ship combat is not nearly as boring and lackluster as the original introduction in AC3. It feels much more fluid and integrated into the game than Connor's foray. The transitions are seamless between open world free-running and open sea sailing. There's SO much to explore I feel almost overwhelmed. You can purchase shortcuts to show all locales for a given collectible through the PSN (or XBL) but that's half the fun of the game anyway!! Combat is as fluid as ever, despite the occasional annoying group fight that you have to constantly be mindful of the "sniper on the roof" while you dispatch swarms of guards. Even things like winning a bar brawl to unlock that tavern give it that AC1 "investigation" progression feel. Ubisoft were even wise enough to bring back costumes that serve a special purpose. Despite feeling like a traitor wearing the Templar armor, you get a significant defensive bonus to make the Templar Hunt missions worth your time. And when you've leveled up your Jackdaw (the ship) to the point that it's able to take on the heavy Man-of-war ships without breaking a sweat, you still have the super challenging Legendary Ship battles to contend with on the open seas. Try accidentally engaging one before you're ready early on in the game and you'll see why they're legendary. I have a suspicion I'll be sinking hundreds of hours into this game just to enjoy all the bits and pieces. Remember the sometimes-frustrating "almanac pages" that didn't seem to really offer much reward in AC3? They're back, only now they unlock songs for your Jackdaw crew to sing while exploring the open seas. Still not a reason to stop your progression to hunt down every last one, but they do add a lot to the atmosphere of the game. And the second screen app is such a big help. It's a constantly open map that allows you to select waypoints on your tablet without having to pause the game. Whatever you do in app happens in realtime on screen. This is next gen.Controls - Not much to say here. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. They upgraded the controls at sea to where you don't feel completely helpless sailing into the wind during battles. As much as the "changing winds" may not be realistic, it's compromise to make the naval portion far less cumbersome and more enjoyable than the previous entry.Visuals/Audio - This is a shining example of what next gen polish will be for the next few years. Despite youtube videos of goofy bugs, I have yet to come across a single glitched pixel in my playthrough (sitting around 40 hours dedicated to exploring everything in game and only about half way through the story). And the audio is a character of it's own in this entry. From the period-style music to the sea chanties while sailing on the Jackdaw, you are completely immersed in the golden age of piracy. The only thing that could improve this experience would possibly be grabbing a bottle of Captain Morgan and playing it through some sort of Oculus Rift build, lol.Story - (No major spoilers) At about the halfway mark, this story has two interesting points of view. The main story, following the sailor-turned-captain Edward Kenway who's only initial motivation is to gain fame and fortune as a pirate in the golden age. It's a refreshing new spin on the stagnant "This is Desmond's great great great great (etc) grandfather and he was pulled into the war of Assassin's vs Templars by fate" tale. Edward is a true pirate, with no true allegience to anyone but himself and his crew/ship. He just happens to fall into the ongoing war through his friends but so far doesn't have the true motivator that all the other characters had right off the bat. The wraparound is a first person point of view "unknown" character that is starting his new job at Abstergo Entertainment, a division of Abstergo that is focused on selling immersive virtual reality experiences based on the real lives of past (related to desmond's bloodline) figures. In the course of the not-too-subtle first person experience, you encounter a LOT of (read: All of) the familiar faces from previous wrap arounds.Overall - This is the standard so far for this new generation. Killzone: Shadow Fall has shown what the system can do visually and with the controller touch pad gimmick, but AC4 outshines it by putting together the total package. I didn't address the multiplayer because it feels a little too much like a crowded version of Splinter Cell: Conviction's Spies vs Spies mode still, and though it's an interesting, intense distraction, the real meat of the AC games is the campaign. Like Bioshock, you shouldn't mark a game down because they tried something new, you only mark them down if they don't innovate and instead release something a step back. AC4:BF Outshines the competition in the launch window so far. It is a must own, regardless of which system you buy it on. For a launch title, this is as perfect as it gets but there's always room to push the limits.SIDE NOTE: I do have to mention that Amazon failed miserably with it's preorder fulfillment. First, the Black Pirate Edition came with a McFarlane Toys figure of Black Bart that Amazon stated would have additional DLC available in game with the figure. However, deceptively, they forgot to mention that it did not work for the next gen versions. Second, despite preordering, Amazon never sent the redemption code. It took several phone calls and emails to rectify the situation. I don't believe in penalizing a game's rating for the service a retailer gave, or else this would have lost another star or two due to Amazon's sketchy avoidance of resolving their issue. The icing on the cake was the Ubisoft website still showing the preorder bonus being available for Xbox One well after the PS4 launch only to have Amazon pull the Xbox One advertisement from its after it failed to fulfill preorder bonuses on the PS4 launch. And then, the customer service rep was able to respond with, "I can't find any details on a preorder bonus for Amazon." until directed to the Ubisoft site. OOPS!

This game is amazing.
I will start my review with the good parts of the game and then end it in all the bad, issues, or problems I had with it.The Good1. The game's graphics to me are amazing. Throughout my 7 day's of playing this game non-stop, I just couldn't get over the fact that the graphics were so amazing. When they showed a close up of you or someone else, you can see the stitching in the clothes or the wrinkles in the leather and all that sort of detail. I found myself time and time again just sitting at a eagle point and just looking at the scenery. This game has to be one of my most favorite looking games by far.2. This game lets you go anywhere you want at anytime. The fact that in this Assassin's Creed game they give you a huge open world to sail around is just fantastic. Sail to it once and you can fast travel there from now on but even with the fast travel feature, I still found myself sailing to most of my locations as long they weren't across the entire map as it takes a good 20 minutes to actually sail to one end to the otherJust looking at the map you can see the main locations (25+) that are either towns of cities or other things like Mayan ruins. Soon after you start playing this however you quickly realize that there is much more than just those towns and cities. There are tons of tiny islands to explore and tons of secrets to find out. I've easily played more than 100 hours of game play and I still haven't discovered everything.3. There is tons of stuff to do in this game. Ranging from treasure maps, crafting, upgrading your ship, Assassin missions, hunting, exploring, collecting things to unlock others, and a whole bunch more. Even near the end of the game they give you 4 legendary ships to battle and destroy. Even though you can go to these ships at anytime you want, its highly suggested you don't until your ship is fixed up with top notice upgrades which takes a good amount of time to collect. I actually enjoy this game because hardly anything is just "Given" to you like most games now days. You legitimately have to put a good amount of game play in to even get the best stuff. Sure you craft level 4 armor right off the bat my killing 2 great white sharks, but its the fact you need to craft all 4 to actually get the max amount of health. Which requires you to visit many different areas of the game, as some animals are specific to one area.4. Out of the animus. When you're outside the animus there is loads of secrets to figure out and unlock. Most of them accessible more near the end of the game. Its a real joy to know whether your in or out of the animus you will have something to do. I've even spent a great amount of time out of the animus collecting all the things there is to collect and I know I'm only about half way done. This area would be a lot longer, but I dont want to spoil anything because 99.9% of the time you're out of the animus its story related. Never the less, you have the option to go in or come out of the animus at anytime like AC3. My suggestion, save most of the exploring when out of the animus towards the end of the game as you will have a lot more to explore. The Bad1. Repetitive. Most of the time in the story I found it was mostly follow, eavesdrop, kill. Which is "Ok" but they could have done better and not made it so repetitive.2. 2 outfits had some, problems more or less. I found that the main outfit and the pirate captain outfit both had their underarm cloth just bouncing up and down as you walked. Not noticeable when running, but really bothered me. I strongly believe the pirate captain outfit is one of the best looking outfits in the game but while walking it just looks stupid. I cant even tell you how many times I considering changing my outfit to something i didn't like as much just so i didn't see the bouncing of the underarm cloth.3. A very specific mission where you have to follow, eavesdrop and kill glitched out and I had to replay this entire mission. Although it only happened once, this mission took about 45 minutes to do once and maybe 30 minutes the second time because I knew how to do it. It's one of the ending missions so I'm not going to ruin the story for you by telling you exactly how I think it was caused as it contains many spoilers.4. This isn't really bad but more of just a little disappointment. Although you can customize your ships sails, wheel, and statue thingy at the front (what ever its called) I was disappointed I couldn't customize the color of the ship itself or upgrade it to be bigger.5. If you buy the extremely cheap (I believe its $1.99 could be $.99) add on that gives you Altair's and Ezio's sails, front statue thingy, and swords. It will render almost all buy-able swords pointless to buy as long as you just use Ezio's swords. I had these from the beginning of the game till the end and never had 1 problem and noticed all swords that you didn't have to unlock though doing all of a certain kind of mission were useless and less powerful... Maybe by 1 more damage6. One gun in specific has a range of 6.... this gun is overpowered because of its range. All other guns have better damage by far but range, nothing comes close. Their cheap and i've used them throughout the entire game. I just have to say these guns need to be weakened, I've been able to shoot someone from 40-55 feet away which back in the 1700's was extremely good.7. Dart somehow can be shot just as far as the pistol I talked about above, if not longer.... how the hell? You're using nothing but a tube, dart and the air from your lungs... this shouldn't be possible when you're being compared to a gun....Not complaining, I mean its really nice being able to make people go crazy from 50 feet away but this shouldn't be possible.Other than the minor problems i had, its an amazing game. this is worth the money and honestly suggest getting if you have a ps4.

Not ground-breaking, but very fun.
AC IV is not by any means the greatest Assassins Creed to date but it is a huge improvement over AC3 and for PS4 owners, it is arguably the richest gaming experience of all the available launch titles.Pros:The ship-to-ship combat is very fun, offering upgrade incentives and varying degrees of challenge to the player. Kenway's ship is upgradable by looting resources from enemy ships and upgrades are necessary to fight larger ships with more armor and firepower. Upgrading the ship takes a significant amount of looting and treasure hunting, but it is fun and never felt like work even though it's quite repetitive.Game-play in AC IV is very smooth and the graphics look excellent for an open world game with basically no load times. I had almost no issues climbing, jumping, running, or swimming throughout the game, although the controls while swimming underwater take a bit of getting used to.The multiplayer content is great. I have played every other AC title and never played multiplayer on any of them, so I was very pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable multiplayer is in AC IV. So far (early 2014) this multiplayer experience has provided me with more replay value than any other game for PS4.The scavenger hunts are always one of my favorite parts of any AC title and AC IV has added some new treasures to find across the pirate infested Caribbean. My favorite things to chase down are the sea shanty's which attempt to fly away as you approach and once captured, they provide your crew with a new song to sing as you sail the open sea.The portion of the gameplay outside of the animus is unique, without giving away any spoilers I will say that you are coerced by a mysterious man to steal data from the Abstergo office and deliver it to some familiar allies from previous games. The weapons and combat great, offering you killing power and mobility that you're used to from AC titles but in a new environment.Cons:The story follows Edward Kenway, a pirate who finds himself mixed-up with assassins and templars in the Caribbean Sea. Edward's loyalty is really only as good as the gold it provides at first, but throughout the game that changes as he get's more involved with the power struggle between the two secret societies. Edward does not develop any lasting relationships with other characters which leaves me as a player quite indifferent to who he is or who the other characters throughout the game are. The story will not be anybody's favorite part of this game, and would have docked some stars if the open world environment didn't pick up the slack. Also Kenway is not really an Assassin, which doesn't affect the gaming experience but it does cause some detachment from the over-arching conflict that is present in other AC titles.Climbing back onto the ship gets to be a little tedious as Kenway will find many reasons to stop the ship throughout the gameplay and unless your near a dingy on the the beach you have to swim out and climb up the side of the ship many many times. This didn't really bother me much, but it would be ideal if there were a sort of lift (like you might find in the cities to propel you to the top of a building) to assist you out of the water and onto the deck of the Jackdaw. The multiplayer is in need of patching, I have been playing on a consistently for about three months following the release of the PS4 and loading the multiplayer menu for AC IV still causes the game to freeze on a regular basis. Matches will also sometimes get a bit buggy as players come and go during the character selection, but this is more due to connectivity issues than the game itself. I have posted on Ubisofts forums about these issues and am still awaiting a fix.As with all Assassins Creed titles, there is very little danger to your character. I wish it weren't quite so easy to stay alive during the fighting in Assassins Creed, but it's also fun to be nearly invulnerable when surrounded by enemies. If you own a PS4 and you want to have some lasting content on your new console, I recommend this game over all the other launch titles for the PS4. My 5 stars would have been a 4 stars if this game hadn't come at a time when the PS4 was desperately starving for more content.

Arrgh!
This review is for the PS4 version. After initially completing the Ezio Collection, I was hooked on the series and recently purchased Black Flag along with some of the other AC series. I probably should not have played and completed Syndicate though prior to playing this one as I have gotten use to the smooth character movement and (even though some people didn’t like it) the grapple hook that Syndicate has.Like the Ezio collection, the controls for Black Flag are awkward to me as I tend to grab and jump onto/off something when I really didn’t intend to do that. For me, jumping and climbing is really difficult at times and find that I really miss the smoothness and ease of jumping and climbing that Syndicate has. Granted this game came out before Syndicate, so I am willing to cut it a bit of slack with that but it is nevertheless frustrating at times. As it is with the AC games, there is plenty to do with side quests and the collecting of things. It is interesting to explore the varies areas around the islands. There is a variety of different quests to do throughout but are pretty similar to what has been done before in the previous games so it does lack a bit in original game play. I do think the ship and ship battles are an interesting new element to the game. The collecting of the animus items and songs gets a bit repetitive and is probably my least favorite part of the game. The songs are a bit of a pain to chase down, although you can pretty much stay where the chase starts to get it fairly easily when it returns. At least the collectable items aren’t as hard to find as the glitches in Syndicate. The Island scenery is well done and detailed considering the game is 4 yrs old now and considering I am comparing it to Syndicate. The water is especially detailed and nicely done. The basic gameplay is pretty much the same as Ezio games. I do like Syndicate’s fight controls a bit better as it was easier and worked a bit more smoothly. I do think that this games missions are more challenging here in Black Flag than Syndicate though as I thought Syndicate's missions were pretty easy to complete.I am not big fan of multiplayer but this does have an ok MP feature.I have enjoyed playing the game though, but like with all the AC games, I do have some complaints. As with the previous AC games, there is still issues with glitchy camera views at times that make it hard to see and do things, such as the scenery blocking your view in the middle of a fight as well as some random game crashes. A minor gripe is that you cannot put the PS4 in rest mode without quitting the game. The game button interaction is a bit finicky at times as well. As with most Ubi games, I am also not a fan of the microtransactions to get extra stuff concept but luckily you can avoid that and still build your character without paying extra to do so. I do think there is a lot of the sameness in the missions as previous games though and that is a bit of a bummer. I am not so crazy about the Animus office scenes and collecting of notes as it is a bit boring and seems a bit unnecessary to the game. I also think the game menus could be a little less clunky but that could be because I got use to the way Syndicates menus were done. The story is pretty good though with a likeable character. The ship battles are a neat addition, but I do think the ship controls are a bit clunky and make the battles a bit harder to manipulate than they should be. There are plenty of things to keep you busy, although the missions can get a bit repetitive.I am coming late to this game and got it for less than 20 bucks, but I still find it is fun enough and worth playing, especially if you are a fan of the series.4 stars
