Hair fades to grey, but the music's colors do not.
I of course heard portions of this played repeatedly at school dances and listening parties, but back then I was in a different mood (think Joy Division). I bought it, like everyone else in the neighboring community, but it remained on the shelf, not listened to for many years. This album has however aged rather well, and it was quite fitting that "Fade To Grey" should grace the series "Ashes to Ashes" - Alex Drake visiting a night club and seeing the actual Steve Strange playing himself - albeit a bit older ... This is also one of those albums from back in the day in which so many of the then top pop musicians joined forces - the list of participants is a Who's Who of synth-oriented British rock, including people from Magazine and Ultravox. It is perhaps the peak of the New Romantics.

An absolute classic (that was way ahead of its time). Never tire of listening to it!As a lot of people have already suggested on here, a remastered edition (with bonus tracks & 12" mixes) is WAY overdue.(A good example: the recent Nik Kershaw remasters breathed new life into those old recordings, and the sound is crisp, pristine, and stunning).Come on Polydor, pull yer finger out. Do you want my money or what??!! ;-)

Pretty Good
quite good for its time .. a good mix of synth and traditional instruments with some interesting musical ideas .. "fade to grey" and "the steps" are the show stealers here but the rest of the tracks are good in there own way .. "the dancer" is a bit cheesy and the only dissapointment on the album .. not as electronic as i would have hoped with a lot of guitars and traditional drum kit on some tracks .. well mixed album .. just short of the 5 stars

Not about looking good but sounding great
This album is a classic of it's time. In some ways I think it suffers for this - the visuals and the utter 1980-ness of the package mean it is largely forgotten. That's a real shame because there is some great stuff on here. FTG stands out but Mind of a Toy, Visa-Age and the instrumentals are all strong. The other thing I really like is you get a sense of those involved making the music they wanted to rather than trying to write hits - a lot of this is not commercial and that gives it integrity.Quite how all these people ended up making music together and quite how Currie and Ure were able to contribute so much to this as well as Ultravox I have no idea but I for one am very glad they bothered

A CLASSIC OF THE ERA
A CLASSIC ALBUM :the whole album is brilliant from it's post Bowie Low instrumentals to the synth pop 'Fade to grey' which still seems like it's come from the future....another highlight is the gothic 'Mind of a toy'. A must have for any synth head or 80's fan.
