An excellent quick reference of the WW1 soldier which could be useful for the renactor and sudent of the period. Sometimes, these more simple reference books are invaluable in passing the essence and basics in today's language rather than from the official publications of the time. So glad I gave this a shot.

This book, which arrived very quickly, contains fascinating details of the ordinary soldier's life - training, equipment, routines, trench systems, etc. If you had a relative who served on the Western Front in WW1 and want to find out what life warlike for him, then I recommend this.

A good attempt at a wide subject.Concerns mostly what the soldier wore, used and lived in. Using a combination of period photos and re-enactors to show drill specifics etc. the reader can get a good idea of what live was like for the Tommy. Added to these are numerous extracts from the various manuals and handbooks of the time regarding trenches, assault parties etc.Although it states 1914-18 all models on the front cover, it is the back cover that states that the focus in on the Western Front soldier. So other theatres are not really covered.This manual covers a lot of topics, though not in any great depth. As a general book on the Western Front Tommy I found it a great companion to the more specific WW1 books, diaries, memoirs that I have.

This book is very concise, but the information doesn't feel too heavy going. It's well laid out and easy to understand. I would recommend this for all ages who are interested in learning about the British in WW1.

This book is focused on themes of interest to historians, reenactors, and history buffs. The illustrations are beautifully done and provide a great deal of detailed information. So I highly recommend the book. One note is worth mentioning. Author Peter Doyle collaborated on another book called 'Remembering Tommy.' Both relate to different aspects of the British soldier's experience in the Great War. Although the illustrations are different, both books use almost identical text.

Wonderful book, very knowledgable and easy to read. Well documented and written.
